Is the Ha Giang Loop worth it? For most travellers, yes. If you can give it at least three days, cope with long days on steep mountain roads and sleep happily in a simple homestay, it is the most dramatic landscape you can reach from Hanoi on a short trip. It is not worth it if you only have a day or two, want hotel comfort, or cannot sit on a motorbike for hours, though some of those problems have an honest fix, which we cover below.
We are Ha Giang Ali Travel, a licensed international tour operator (licence 08-0007/2025/CDLQGVN-GP LHQT) with our own hostel in Ha Giang city. This is the answer we give people who message us before they book: what the loop really costs in money and time, who comes home thrilled, and who would have been happier somewhere else. By the end you should know whether you will find the Ha Giang Loop worth it. For the full money breakdown, read our guide to what a Ha Giang Loop trip really costs; for the safety side, see is the Ha Giang Loop safe.
Is the Ha Giang Loop worth it? The short answer
Here is the quick test we use. If most of the left column fits you, you will find the Ha Giang Loop worth it. If most of the right column fits, read the section on who should skip it before you book anything.
| Probably worth it if you… | Probably not worth it if you… |
|---|---|
| Have 3–4 days free in northern Vietnam, plus a night bus each way | Only have one or two days in total for the whole north |
| Want big mountain scenery and village life more than comfort | Want hotels, quiet evenings and short drives |
| Are happy to sit behind a local Easy Rider, or hold a valid licence and the right driving permit | Have serious back problems, are pregnant, or travel with children under 6 (motorbike tours cannot take you) |
| Travel between September and May, the dry and clear months | Hate rain and can only travel in the wettest weeks of summer |

What makes the Ha Giang Loop worth it?
The scenery is the real thing, not a filter
The high point, literally, is the Ma Pi Leng Pass. From a summit of around 1,500 metres the view drops straight into the Nho Que River canyon. Vietnam’s Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism ranked Ma Pi Leng a National Scenic Relic in 2009 and counts the summit among the finest panoramas in the country. The whole area sits inside the Dong Van Karst Plateau UNESCO Global Geopark.
What photos rarely show is the story under the tarmac: this stretch of the Happiness Road was cut into the cliffs by hand, with hammers and crowbars, by young volunteers from Meo Vac. On our 3-, 4- and 5-day Essential loops you also ride down to the river and take a boat through the Tu San Canyon, with limestone walls hundreds of metres high on both sides. That combination, the road above and the river below, is a big part of why people find the Ha Giang Loop worth it.

Village life you cannot see from a bus window
The loop is not only a road trip. On day one of our 3-day route you stop in Lung Tam to watch H’Mong women weave hemp on traditional looms. On day two you pass through Lo Lo Chai, a Black Lo Lo village of mud-wall houses right under the Lung Cu Flagpole. In the evening you eat a home-cooked dinner with your host family. For many guests these small, unplanned moments make the Ha Giang Loop worth it more than any single viewpoint. Read more about the cultures of Ha Giang before you go.

What does it cost, and is the Ha Giang Loop worth it for the money?
Here are our own current prices, taken from the live price list. They include 8% VAT and the border-area permit; dollar figures are converted at 26,000 VND. The last column divides the price by the number of riding days, so you can judge whether you find the Ha Giang Loop worth it against a day of travel elsewhere in Vietnam.
| Tour (how you ride) | Days | Price per person | About per day |
|---|---|---|---|
| Express (Easy Rider) | 2 | 2,790,000 VND (~$107) | ~$54 |
| Dong Van & Ma Pi Leng (ride by yourself) | 3 | 3,250,000 VND (~$125) | ~$42 |
| Dong Van & Ma Pi Leng (Easy Rider) | 3 | 4,250,000 VND (~$163) | ~$54 |
| Du Gia Waterfall (Easy Rider) | 4 | 5,550,000 VND (~$213) | ~$53 |
| Classic White Cliff & Sky Path (Easy Rider) | 3 | 5,250,000 VND (~$202) | ~$67 |
| Classic White Cliff & Sky Path (private car) | 3 | 6,850,000 VND (~$263) | ~$88 |
On the 3-day Easy Rider tour that price covers almost everything: your bike, fuel and rider, two homestay nights, three breakfasts, three lunches and two dinners, 1.5 litres of water a day, an English-speaking guide, every scheduled entrance fee, the Tu San Canyon boat, the permit (filed at cost, 260,000 VND per person per province) and BIC travel insurance up to 50,000,000 VND. You also get a free dorm bed at Ali Hostel when the night bus drops you at 04:00–05:00.
What is not included is the bus from Hanoi (sleeper 250,000 VND one way), drinks beyond water, tips and personal spending. So a realistic all-in figure for the 3-day Easy Rider loop with a sleeper both ways is about 4,750,000 VND, roughly $183, before tips and drinks. For a road trip with a rider, a guide, all meals and beds, that is the number to weigh when you decide whether you find the Ha Giang Loop worth it for the money. If you are comparing operators, our pages on what a Ha Giang Loop tour includes and cheap Ha Giang Loop tours show what to check.
Two dates change the maths: the tour service is +10% on public holidays and on flower-season weekends in October and November, and +30% at Tet (4–11 February 2027). The surcharge never applies to the permit or bike rental.

What the loop costs you besides money
Price is rarely what makes people regret the trip. These five things are, so weigh them honestly before you decide if you will find the Ha Giang Loop worth it.
- Time. A 3-day loop from Hanoi means a night bus up, three riding days and an evening bus back: about four nights away, two of them on a bus. Our guide to the Hanoi to Ha Giang bus explains sleeper, cabin and limousine options.
- Long days. The passes are steep with sharp bends and some days run to around 150 km. Even on the back of a bike you will be tired, and the wind at altitude is colder than Hanoi.
- Weather. September to May is dry and clear; June to August is green but rainy, and cloud can hide a view for an hour or a day. We ride in light rain with rain gear. If we cancel for safety (a storm warning, a closed pass, a landslide) you choose a free date change or a 100% refund. See Ha Giang weather by month.
- Other people. The famous viewpoints are busy on weekends and in flower season; the provincial newspaper reported more than 93,000 visitors at Lung Cu Flagpole alone in the third quarter of 2026. Our guide to Ha Giang Loop crowds shows how to time your days around them.
- Basic beds. Essential tours sleep in shared-dorm homestays; a private room is +350,000 VND per room per night. Classic tours give you a private en-suite room. Here is what a homestay night is really like.

Who will find the Ha Giang Loop worth it, and who should skip it?
You will probably love it if…
These are the travellers who tend to find the Ha Giang Loop worth it:
- You are travelling alone: Essential tours run from a single guest and you join that day’s group. See the Ha Giang Loop solo.
- You are a couple who want a shared adventure; read our notes for couples on the loop.
- You love photography; our list of photo spots covers where and when to stop.
Think twice, or choose the car, if…
Our motorbike tours are not suitable for children under 6, pregnant women or anyone with serious back problems, and we cannot accommodate wheelchairs. Travel insurance does not cover guests over 80. None of that means the north is closed to you: every Classic tour has a private car option for 2 to 4 guests with private rooms. The car keeps the scenery that makes the Ha Giang Loop worth it within reach. Read the Ha Giang Loop by car, the loop with kids and our guide for travellers over 50.
Wait for another trip if…
You have one free day. Ha Giang city is a night bus away from Hanoi, and the highlights are spread over several days of riding further north. Our 2-day Express covers the core of the loop at a faster pace; if you can add a third day, you will see more and rush less, and you will be far more likely to call the Ha Giang Loop worth it.

How to make the Ha Giang Loop worth it
Six choices decide whether you will find the Ha Giang Loop worth it. Get these right and the rest takes care of itself.
- Give it three or four days. Three days fits Lung Cu, Ma Pi Leng and the Nho Que boat without rushing; four days adds Du Gia. Our guides on how many days you need and the day-by-day itinerary help you choose.
- Be honest about riding. No licence or no mountain experience? Sit behind an Easy Rider: no licence needed, and you spend the day looking at the view instead of the road. To ride yourself you need a licence for the bike class plus an International Driving Permit under the 1968 convention. Compare both in Easy Rider vs self-drive.
- Pick your season on purpose. Golden rice terraces in September and October, buckwheat flowers in October and November, peach and plum blossom in March and April. See the buckwheat flower festival and the rice season.
- Check the small print. Permit, insurance, entrance fees and the boat should be inside the price, so nobody asks you for cash at a checkpoint.
- Keep your risk small. Our deposit is 500,000 VND per guest; cancel 30 days or more before departure and it comes back in full, less bank fees. Full terms: booking and refund policy.
- Travel light. Leave your big bag free at Ali Hostel and take a small one on the bike; see Ha Giang Loop luggage and the mistakes first-timers make.
Is the Ha Giang Loop worth it compared with Sapa or Ninh Binh?
They are different trips. Sapa is built around trekking between villages and rice terraces; Ninh Binh is about boat rides through limestone karst, close enough to Hanoi for a short visit. Ha Giang is the long, raw road trip of the three, with the biggest drops and the fewest comforts. You do not always have to choose: buses run between Ha Giang and Sapa (from 300,000 VND one way), so many guests do both. If you want one trip in the north that feels like a real expedition, you will likely find the Ha Giang Loop worth it over the other two. FAQ: Is the Ha Giang Loop worth it?
Is the Ha Giang Loop worth it if I cannot ride a motorbike?
Yes. Easy Rider is the most chosen way to do the loop: a local rider who drives the whole route while you look and take photos. No licence is needed. On Classic tours you can also go by private car.
Is the Ha Giang Loop worth it in the rainy season?
It can be. June to August is the greenest time, but rain and cloud can hide views for hours. We ride in light rain with rain gear, and if we cancel for safety you get a free date change or a 100% refund. If clear views are your main reason to go, choose September to May.
Are 2 days enough for the Ha Giang Loop?
Two days is possible on our Express tour, but it is a fast pace. Three days lets you add Lung Cu, Ma Pi Leng and the Nho Que boat without rushing.
Is the Ha Giang Loop worth it if it is crowded?
For most people, yes. Crowds gather at a handful of viewpoints, mostly on weekends and in flower season. Starting early and travelling on weekdays, away from flower-season weekends, keeps most of the trip quiet.
How much should I budget in total?
For our 3-day Easy Rider tour plus a sleeper bus both ways, about 4,750,000 VND (roughly $183) per person, then extra for drinks and tips. Carry some cash in VND for small purchases along the way. Knowing the full figure up front is the easiest way to judge whether you will find the Ha Giang Loop worth it.
