Yes, you can do the Ha Giang Loop by car, and you see the same passes, canyons and villages as the riders do. A car with a local driver suits older travellers, families with young children, anyone with a bad back and anyone who simply does not want to sit on a motorbike for three days. On our tours it starts at 4,450,000 VND (about $171) per person for 2 days, with your own driver and an English-speaking guide.
We are a licensed tour operator and hostel in Ha Giang city, and our cars leave from the same yard as our Easy Riders every morning. This Ha Giang Loop by car guide covers the honest trade-offs: what you gain and lose compared with a motorbike, what it costs at our current prices, how long the driving days are, how much walking is still involved, and when renting a car yourself makes more sense than joining a tour.
Can You Really Do the Ha Giang Loop by Car?
You can. The main Loop is a paved mountain road network, and cars, minibuses and local trucks use it every day. Doing the Ha Giang Loop by car takes you over Bac Sum Pass, past Quan Ba Heaven’s Gate, along the Tham Ma switchbacks, up to the Lung Cu Flagpole and across Ma Pi Leng Pass — the stops most people come for. If you want to see how those days fit together, our day-by-day Ha Giang Loop itinerary walks through the classic route.
What changes is the feeling, not the map. On a bike you are out in the wind, the cold and the smell of wood smoke from every village. In a car you watch the same scenery through a window, stop where you like and arrive at the homestay dry and rested. Neither is wrong; they are different trips.

Ha Giang Loop by Car or by Motorbike: What Is the Difference?
Here is how the Ha Giang Loop by car compares with the two motorbike options we run, using our 3-day White Cliff & Sky Path route as the example:
| Private car | Easy Rider | Ride by yourself | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Who drives | Local driver, plus a guide | Local rider, you sit behind | You, following a guide |
| Licence needed | No | No | Yes, valid for motorbikes in Vietnam |

| Weather | Roof, heater, air-con | Raincoat and boots provided | Raincoat and boots provided |
| Children under 6 | Yes, free | No | No |
| Luggage | In the boot | Small bag on the bike | Small bag on the bike |
| Feeling | Comfortable, scenic, calm | Open air, no stress | Open air, full adventure |

Who Should Choose the Ha Giang Loop by Car?
From the guests we have sent out by car, these are the people who come back happiest:
- Older travellers. Three days on the back of a bike is tiring at any age. In a car you still climb the passes and stop at every viewpoint, without aching shoulders at dinner.
- Families with young children. Children under 6 cannot join any motorbike tour, but on our private car tours they travel free and share their parents’ room. Children from 6 to under 12 pay 75% of the adult price. Our Ha Giang Loop with kids guide has the details.
- Anyone a motorbike tour is not suitable for. Our motorbike tours are not suitable for pregnant women or anyone with serious back problems. The car keeps them on the trip.
- Nervous passengers. If the idea of hairpin bends on two wheels keeps you awake, the Ha Giang Loop by car removes that fear completely.
- Mixed groups. A common plan: one or two people ride with an Easy Rider for the thrill, and the rest follow in the car. Everyone meets at the same viewpoints and the same homestay.
- Rainy-season travellers. From June to August, showers come most afternoons. A car makes a wet day much easier — see our Ha Giang rainy season guide for what the weather is really like.
One honest limit: we cannot accommodate wheelchairs, because homestays, viewpoints and village paths have steps and uneven ground.
How Much Does the Ha Giang Loop by Car Cost?
These are our current per-person prices for the Ha Giang Loop by car, as shown on our tour pages for two guests sharing a car. All include 8% VAT and the border-area permit, which we file and pay for you at cost.
| Tour | Days | Private car, per person |
|---|---|---|
| Private Trail | 2 | 4,450,000 VND (~$171) |
| White Cliff & Sky Path | 3 | 6,850,000 VND (~$263) |
| Du Gia Valley | 4 | 8,890,000 VND (~$342) |
| Ban Gioc Traverse | 5 | 15,350,000 VND (~$590) |
| Ha Giang & Cao Bang by Private Car | 7 | 19,710,000 VND (~$759) |
Bigger groups pay less each. The car option is a private departure for 2 to 4 guests, priced by the vehicle rather than by the head. On the 3-day route, three people sharing the car pay 5,350,000 VND (about $206) each, and four people pay 4,550,000 VND (about $175) each. That makes the Ha Giang Loop by car slightly cheaper for a group of four than four Easy Riders on the same route, at 4,850,000 VND each.
On the 3-day tour, the price includes pick-up and drop-off in Ha Giang city, two nights in private en-suite homestay rooms, meals as per the itinerary, 1.5 litres of drinking water per person per day, an English-speaking local guide, entrance fees, the Sky Path and White Cliff walks, a bamboo raft on the Ngoc Long stream, and travel insurance with BIC for every guest. Not included: transport to and from Ha Giang city, drinks beyond the water, shopping and tips. For a full breakdown of what a trip costs beyond the tour price, see our Ha Giang Loop cost guide.
To book, we take a deposit of 500,000 VND per guest; the rest is paid before departure. Cancellation terms are on our booking and refund policy page.

How Long Are the Driving Days on the Ha Giang Loop by Car?
Distances on the Loop are short, but the roads are slow. On a 3-day Ha Giang Loop by car with us, following the White Cliff & Sky Path route, the days look like this:
- Day 1: Ha Giang to Lao Sa village via Quan Ba, Lung Tam and the H’Mong King’s Palace — about 150 to 160 km.
- Day 2: Lao Sa to Meo Vac via Lung Cu, Dong Van, the Sky Path and Ma Pi Leng — about 120 to 140 km.
- Day 3: Meo Vac back to Ha Giang via the Ngoc Long stream and Duong Thuong Valley — about 150 to 160 km, arriving late afternoon.
That is not a lot of kilometres, but most of them are bends, and the day is broken by viewpoints, a village visit and lunch. You meet your guide at Ali Hostel at 08:30 and leave after a 09:00 briefing. Our guide to how many days the Loop needs explains why 3 days is the sweet spot for most people.
On the longer Cao Bang trips the days stretch: on our 7-day Ha Giang & Cao Bang by Private Car tour, Day 4 is about 165 km with stops every 1.5 to 2 hours, and Day 5 is the longest at about 210 km, over the Khau Coc Cha Pass to Pac Bo and Cao Bang City.
Will I get car sick?
The passes have long chains of hairpin bends, so if you get car sick at home, plan for it on the Ha Giang Loop by car too. Sit in the front, look at the horizon rather than your phone, keep a window open, eat a light breakfast and bring whatever normally works for you. Ask your driver to stop — there is always another viewpoint a few minutes ahead.

How Much Walking Is There on a Car Tour?
A Ha Giang Loop by car takes the riding out of the trip, not the walking. Most stops are a few steps from the road, but a few of the best moments need your legs. On our routes:
- Lung Cu Flagpole: stone steps up to the tower, then stairs inside it for the view into China.
- White Cliff trek (3-day route): a walk along the rock face above the Nho Que River that needs sure footing. You can skip it and wait at the viewpoint.
- Khau Lan waterfall (3-day route): about 40 minutes on foot through the forest.
- Du Gia waterfall (4-day and 7-day routes): about 300 m of stone path down to the pool.
- Pac Bo and Nguom Ngao Cave (7-day route): about 1.5 km of flat paved path and about 1 km of lit, paved cave walkway — both easy.
Tell us about any knee, hip or heart issue when you book. Your guide will plan which walks to keep and where the car can wait closer.

Which Route Is Best for the Ha Giang Loop by Car?
For a first visit, the 3-day White Cliff & Sky Path route is the one we recommend most for the Ha Giang Loop by car. It covers Quan Ba, the H’Mong King’s Palace, Lung Cu, Dong Van, the Sky Path and Ma Pi Leng, with private en-suite rooms in Lao Sa and Meo Vac.
- Short on time: the 2-day Private Trail fits the Loop into a single homestay night.
- Want a slower pace: the 4-day Du Gia Valley adds a night in a Tay village with a forest waterfall to swim in.
- Want Ban Gioc too: the 7-day Ha Giang & Cao Bang by Private Car tour adds the Nho Que River boat through Tu San Canyon, Khau Coc Cha Pass, Pac Bo, Angel Eye Mountain and a bamboo boat to the foot of Ban Gioc Waterfall. Our Ha Giang to Cao Bang guide explains how the two regions connect.

Can I Rent a Car and Drive the Ha Giang Loop Myself?
Yes, if you hold a licence that is valid for cars in Vietnam. For most visitors that means your home licence plus an International Driving Permit issued under the 1968 Convention; our IDP guide for Vietnam explains who qualifies. Mountain driving here is demanding: narrow bends, trucks, motorbikes, buffalo and fog all share the road.
From our car rental page, a 2025 Toyota Vios costs 1,300,000 VND (about $50) per day to drive yourself, or 2,340,000 VND (about $90) per day with a driver. For larger groups we arrange 7-seat cars, a Kia Sedona, 9-seat limousines and 16-seat vans, priced per route on WhatsApp. Doing the Ha Giang Loop by car on your own gives you freedom, but you plan your own homestays, meals and permits; a car tour includes all of that plus a guide who explains what you are looking at.
Is the Ha Giang Loop by Car Worth It?
If a motorbike is not right for you, absolutely. You still see the karst plateau that UNESCO lists as the Dong Van Karst Plateau Global Geopark, you still sleep in village homestays and eat with the families, and you still stand on the edge of Ma Pi Leng looking down at the river. For background on the province before you go, the official Vietnam tourism guide to Ha Giang is a good starting point.
If you are fit, unafraid and on a tight budget for two, a motorbike gives you more of the wind-in-your-face feeling for less money. For everyone else — and for groups of three or four — the Ha Giang Loop by car is the comfortable, flexible and safe choice.
