Is the Ha Giang Loop in August worth it? Yes: August is the sunniest month of the year in Ha Giang, but it is also hot and still firmly in the rainy season. The Ha Giang city weather station logs about 172 hours of sunshine in August, more than any other month, yet it also records around 415 mm of rain over 21 to 22 rainy days and the highest average daytime temperatures of the year. Ride early, plan around afternoon storms and the 2 September holiday, and the Ha Giang Loop in August gives you green mountains, full waterfalls and long bright mornings.
We are Ha Giang Ali Travel, a licensed tour operator and hostel in Ha Giang city, and our guides ride the Loop every week of the summer. This guide to the Ha Giang Loop in August is built from our own August departures, the official long-term climate figures and our current price list. If your first question is about risk rather than weather, start with our straight answer to is the Ha Giang Loop safe, then come back here for the month-specific details.
Ha Giang Loop in August: the short answer
- Sunshine: about 172 hours, the highest monthly total of the year at the Ha Giang city station.
- Rain: about 415 mm over roughly 21.5 rainy days, less than July (545 mm) but still around ten times the rain of February.
- Heat: average highs of 32.8°C in the city, the hottest daytime average of any month; the Dong Van plateau is several degrees cooler.
- Landscape on the Ha Giang Loop in August: deep green slopes, rice terraces still green (gold arrives from mid-September), waterfalls at full flow and the maize harvest drying in village yards.
- Crowds: peak European holiday month in the hostels; Vietnamese families until school restarts, then a big domestic wave around National Day on 2 September.
- Price: normal prices all month; the +10% public-holiday supplement only touches the 2 September holiday dates.
- Best fit: riders who start early, carry rain gear and keep one spare day for a storm.

What is the weather like on the Ha Giang Loop in August?
The long-term averages for the Ha Giang city station, compiled by the Vietnam Institute for Building Science and Technology and reproduced in the Ha Giang city climate table, describe August like this:
- Temperature: daily mean 27.6°C, average high 32.8°C, average low 24.5°C. The record high for the station, 40.7°C, was also set in an August.
- Rainfall: 414.7 mm on average, spread over 21.5 rainy days.
- Humidity: about 86%, so clothes and boots do not dry overnight on their own.
- Sunshine: 172.1 hours, ahead of September (161.4) and May (158.0), and roughly three times the sunshine of a grey January.
How can a month have both the most sunshine and more than 20 rainy days? Because the rain on the Ha Giang Loop in August arrives as short, heavy bursts rather than all-day drizzle. Mornings are often bright and clear, cloud builds over the karst after lunch, and a storm of one to three hours breaks somewhere between early afternoon and evening. A “rainy day” in the statistics is usually a dry morning with a wet afternoon.
Remember too that the station sits in the valley at around 100 m. The Loop climbs onto the Dong Van karst plateau, where Quan Ba, Yen Minh, Dong Van and Meo Vac lie roughly 1,000 to 1,600 m above sea level. On the high passes the 32.8°C of the city becomes comfortable riding weather, and evenings in Dong Van or Du Gia feel genuinely fresh.
Is the Ha Giang Loop in August too hot?
The heat on the Ha Giang Loop in August is real, but it is a valley problem more than a mountain one. The hottest stretches are the first hour out of Ha Giang city, the lunch stops in the lower valleys and any road that drops towards a river. Up on the plateau the moving air on a motorbike keeps you cool, and the bigger risk is sunburn rather than heat.
How we handle August heat on our tours:
- Early starts. Guests meet at Ali Hostel at 08:00, the safety briefing is at 08:30 and the bikes leave at 09:00, so the long climbs are ridden before the hottest hours and before the afternoon cloud.
- Water is included. Every tour price covers 1.5 litres of drinking water per guest per day, and the guide stops for more whenever the group needs it.
- Long lunch, short afternoon. In August we prefer an unhurried lunch in the shade and a shorter afternoon ride, with the viewpoint stops moved into the morning.
- Cover up. A light long-sleeved shirt protects better than sunscreen alone on a full day of riding, and you will want it anyway for the cooler evenings.

How much does it rain, and how do storms affect the ride?
For most guests on the Ha Giang Loop in August, rain means one soaking a day, a raincoat over the shoulders and a slower final hour into the homestay. That is manageable. What changes a trip is the tropical storm pattern: August sits in the heart of the northern storm season, and when a storm or its remnants come in from the Gulf of Tonkin, the whole highland region can get two or three days of continuous rain at once. That is when passes close for clean-up, river boats are suspended and local authorities may shut waterfalls and riverside sites.
This is not theoretical. On 24 August 2026, after a severe-rain warning from the national weather agency, the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism directed 16 northern provinces, including Tuyen Quang, which Ha Giang now belongs to, to close tourist sites at risk of flash floods and landslides. Our Ha Giang rainy season guide explains what that directive meant on the ground and how we read the forecast each evening.
Three rules we give every guest planning the Ha Giang Loop in August:
- Keep one spare day between the end of the Loop and your onward flight or bus. Most summers it is not needed; the one summer it is, it saves the trip.
- Check the official forecast from the National Centre for Hydro-Meteorological Forecasting the evening before you ride, or simply ask us on WhatsApp.
- Never cross a flooded ford you cannot see the bottom of. Flash water on the Loop usually drops as fast as it rose; waiting thirty minutes costs nothing.

What will you see on the Ha Giang Loop in August?
The rain is the price; this is the reward. The Ha Giang Loop in August shows the region at its fullest and busiest season for farming, which is very different from the bare, smoky look of the dry months.
- Green everywhere. From Quan Ba’s Heaven’s Gate to the Ma Pi Leng Pass, every slope is covered. The switchbacks at Tham Ma and the Me Pia 14-turn pass look like ribbons laid on a green carpet.
- Green, not yet golden, rice. The terraces were planted in late May and June; in August the rice is tall and green. The golden harvest that photographers chase runs from mid-September to mid-October, as our Ha Giang rice season guide explains. If gold is your priority, aim for late September instead.
- Harvest in the yards. August is maize time in the highland villages. In many homestay courtyards you will see grain spread on blue tarps to dry and cobs hanging under the eaves, and families working from first light.
- Waterfalls at full power. Du Gia Waterfall carries its most water from June to August, and on the Grand North Loop, Ban Gioc on the Cao Bang border is at its widest and loudest.
- Clear evening light. With more sunshine hours than any other month, the Ha Giang Loop in August often delivers sharp late-afternoon light after a storm has washed the air.

Can you swim on the Ha Giang Loop in August?
Yes, and on a hot August afternoon it is the best hour of the trip. Our 4-day route rides south from Meo Vac to Du Gia on day 3, about 90 km on a quiet back road, and ends with a swim in the forest pool below Du Gia Waterfall before a night in a Tay stilt-house homestay. Our Du Gia Waterfall guide covers the walk in and the rules for swimming.
The August caveat: after a night of very heavy rain the current strengthens and the pool turns muddy, and during official storm warnings waterfalls can be closed to visitors altogether. Your guide decides on the day. Bring swimwear, a quick-dry towel and sandals with a heel strap; the rocks are slippery.

Is the Ha Giang Loop in August crowded?
It depends which week and which crowd you mean. August is the peak holiday month for European travellers, so the hostels in Ha Giang city are full of first-time riders and popular group departures sell out days ahead. On the road itself, the Ha Giang Loop in August is quieter than spring or the October flower season. Vietnamese families on summer holiday fill the headline stops, Lung Cu Flag Tower, the Ma Pi Leng viewpoints and the Nho Que boat pier, mainly at weekends.
The one date to plan around is National Day on 2 September. The days around it bring one of the biggest domestic travel waves of the year, homestays in Dong Van and Meo Vac fill quickly, and the tour service carries the +10% public-holiday supplement on those dates. If your Ha Giang Loop in August runs into the last days of the month, either book early or finish before the holiday begins. Our Ha Giang Loop crowds guide shows the busy and quiet weeks across the year.
Which tour should you choose for the Ha Giang Loop in August?
All our departures run through August. These are the ones we recommend most for the month:
- Du Gia Waterfall, 4 days: the classic Loop plus the quiet valley road to Du Gia. Day 2 covers about 100 km with the 286 steps of Lung Cu and the Nho Que boat, ticket included; day 3 ends with the waterfall swim. The best match for a hot month.
- Dong Van and Ma Pi Leng, 3 days: the core Loop for travellers short on time, with the first night in the old quarter of Dong Van.
- Grand North Loop, 5 days: the Ha Giang Loop plus the Me Pia 14-turn pass, Pac Bo and Ban Gioc Waterfall in Cao Bang, finishing with a bus to Hanoi. In August, Ban Gioc is at full flow; check our Cao Bang weather guide for what that means.
- Classic private tours for your own group of up to 6 guests, with private en-suite rooms and the option of a private car if you would rather stay dry. Our Essential group tours take up to 10 guests.
Easy Rider or your own bike? For a first Loop in the wet season we recommend riding pillion with a local driver who handles wet bends every week. Self-riders need confidence on mountain roads and a valid licence, for most foreigners a 1968-Convention International Driving Permit. Our Easy Rider vs self-drive comparison helps you decide honestly.

When should you book the Ha Giang Loop in August, and what if a storm hits?
Book the Ha Giang Loop in August one to two weeks ahead for normal dates, and earlier if your trip touches the 2 September holiday. A deposit of 500,000 VND per guest holds your place; the rest is paid before departure, by bank transfer or at our office in Ha Giang on arrival.
Our weather rule is simple. If we cancel a tour for safety, because of a storm warning, a closed pass, a landslide or a government closure, you choose a free date change or 100% of your money back with no deductions. In lighter rain we ride with rain gear and adjust the pace. If you cancel yourself, the normal terms apply: 30 days or more before departure, the deposit comes back in full less bank fees; 7 to 29 days, half the deposit; under 7 days, the deposit is kept. That is why we would rather you keep a spare day than book a tight connection.
What should you pack for the Ha Giang Loop in August?
Pack for the Ha Giang Loop in August with strong sun, one daily downpour and cool plateau evenings in mind. On a tour your big bag stays free at Ali Hostel and you ride with a small day bag, so keep it light.
- Sun first: high-SPF sunscreen, sunglasses, a buff or scarf for the neck and a light long-sleeved shirt.
- Rain second: a hooded rain jacket plus a cheap poncho over your bag, and dry bags for phone, passport and spare clothes.
- Two sets of quick-dry clothes, because with 86% humidity nothing dries overnight.
- Swimwear, a quick-dry towel and strap sandals for Du Gia or Ban Gioc.
- Electrolyte sachets, insect repellent for homestay evenings and a thin warm layer for Dong Van nights.
The full year-round checklist is in our Ha Giang Loop packing list.
