When is the Ha Giang rice season? In short: the terraced fields of Ha Giang turn a deep, glowing gold from mid-September to mid-October, with the peak usually falling in the last week of September and the first week of October. If you time your ride for the Ha Giang rice season, you trade the summer haze for crisp mountain air, clear valleys, and hillsides that look as if they were carved from bronze.

At Ali Travel we run the Ha Giang Loop through every season of the year, and autumn is the one that stops guests mid-sentence. This guide shares exactly when the golden harvest peaks, where to find the best rice terraces, and a timely local festival that most foreign travelers never hear about — straight from riders who are out on these roads right now.

When is the Ha Giang rice season?

Ha Giang — now officially part of Tuyen Quang province after the 2025 provincial merger, though everyone still calls the region and the loop “Ha Giang” — has two beautiful rice moments, and it helps to know the difference:

  • Green season (late May – June): the newly planted paddies flood with water and shimmer like mirrors, then flush emerald green.
  • Golden season (mid-September – mid-October): the rice ripens and the whole landscape turns gold before the harvest. This is the classic Ha Giang rice season that photographers chase.

Exact timing shifts a little each year with the weather, and higher villages ripen a few days later than the valleys. As a rule of thumb, aim for the final week of September to be safe. Come too late and you may find bare, harvested fields; the farmers cut quickly once the grain is ready. If your dates are fixed, message us before you book — our guides check the fields weekly and can tell you which valleys are still golden.

Where are the best places to see the Ha Giang rice season?

The eastern loop (Dong Van, Meo Vac, Ma Pi Leng) is famous for limestone drama, but the finest terraces sit on the western side of the region. If rice is your priority, point your wheels west.

Hoang Su Phi

Hoang Su Phi is the undisputed capital of the Ha Giang rice season. Its terraces climb impossibly steep slopes and were recognized as a National Heritage Site of Vietnam for their scale and beauty. Base yourself in a Hoang Su Phi homestay and wake to fog pooling between gold-tiered ridgelines. Sunrise from a ridge above the fields is the shot most riders come home talking about.

Thong Nguyen and Ban Phung

A short ride from Hoang Su Phi, the villages of Thong Nguyen and Ban Phung offer some of the tallest terraces in the country with a fraction of the visitors. This is slow, quiet countryside — buffalo on the trails, wooden stilt houses, and elders working the paddies by hand.

Du Gia Valley

On the eastern loop, Du Gia gives you the best of both worlds: a green-and-gold valley floor ringed by karst peaks, a waterfall to swim in, and warm homestays run by the local Tay community. It is the perfect place to break up a long riding day during the Ha Giang rice season.

What is the “Golden Season” harvest festival in Cao Duong?

Here is something you will not read in most guidebooks. On 19–20 September 2026, the highland village of Cao Duong (Bach Xa commune, in the southern part of Tuyen Quang province, on the main road up to Ha Giang) held its annual “Golden Season on Cao Duong” festival — a genuine community celebration of the harvest, not a staged show for tourists.

According to Bao Tuyen Quang, villagers and visitors joined folk games that only make sense in a rice-farming culture: catching carp barehanded in the flooded paddies, top-spinning, blindfolded pot-smashing and duck-catching, plus a “Cao Duong Steps” trail race. A country market laid out local OCOP produce, mountain specialties, traditional costume, folk songs and dances.

Why does this matter to you? Because the same golden harvest that lights up the terraces is, for the people who farm it, a season of celebration. Festivals like this move around the region each September — ask your guide what is happening in the villages while you ride, and you may stumble into the most memorable afternoon of your whole trip.

How to plan your Ha Giang rice season trip

A little planning goes a long way when the golden window is only three or four weeks long.

  • How many days: give yourself at least 3 days / 2 nights, or 4 days if you want the western terraces plus the classic eastern loop. Rushing the harvest is a waste of a long journey north.
  • How to ride: confident riders can take a self-drive motorbike rental; everyone else is better off on the back of an experienced easy-rider, or in a private car or jeep. September roads are mostly dry but a few passes stay slick after rain.
  • Where to stay: book valley-view homestays early — the good rooms in Hoang Su Phi and Du Gia sell out fast during the Ha Giang rice season.
  • What to pack: warm mornings, chilly evenings. Bring layers, a light rain shell, and real shoes for muddy field paths. Our full packing list covers the rest.

Ha Giang Rice Season FAQ

What month is the Ha Giang rice season?

The golden Ha Giang rice season runs from mid-September to mid-October, peaking around late September. The green, water-filled season is late May to June.

Is late September a good time for the Ha Giang Loop?

Yes — late September is arguably the best of the year: golden terraces, clear skies, comfortable riding temperatures and lower rainfall than the summer months.

Where are the best rice terraces in Ha Giang?

Hoang Su Phi, Thong Nguyen and Ban Phung on the western side hold the grandest terraces; Du Gia offers a beautiful golden valley on the eastern loop.

Can I still see the terraces in mid-October?

Sometimes. Higher villages ripen last, so mid-October can still be golden up top while the valleys are already harvested. Check with a local guide before locking in your dates.
