Ha Giang Loop Luggage: Where to Leave Your Big Bag and What to Carry (2026)

Ha Giang Loop luggage left safely in the Ali Hostel lobby in Ha Giang city

Your Ha Giang Loop luggage plan is simple: leave the big bag at your hostel in Ha Giang city and ride with one small backpack. At Ali Hostel, luggage storage is free for the whole tour, from the moment your night bus arrives until you are back in town, and the 2-, 3- and 4-day loops all finish in Ha Giang city. The only Ha Giang Loop luggage exception is the one-way routes to Cao Bang, where your bag has to travel with you, and we explain exactly how that works below.

We are Ha Giang Ali Travel, a licensed tour operator and hostel in Ha Giang city (now part of Tuyen Quang province). Our reception looks after backpacks, suitcases and the occasional guitar case every day of the week while their owners ride the passes, and our Easy Riders strap a day bag onto a bike every morning. This guide answers the Ha Giang Loop luggage questions we get on WhatsApp most often: where the bag goes, what to carry on the bike, what to leave behind, and what changes when your route does not come back to Ha Giang.

Where Do You Leave Your Luggage During the Ha Giang Loop?

At Ali Hostel, free, until you are back in Ha Giang city. That is the whole Ha Giang Loop luggage answer for the loop tours, and it is the same answer you will hear at most hostels in town. You drop the big bag at reception before the 09:00 departure, it stays in Ha Giang while you ride, and you collect it when the tour returns to the city in the late afternoon of the last day.

Our Ha Giang Loop luggage storage is built around the way the tours run. Night buses from Hanoi reach Ha Giang city around 04:00 to 05:00, and tour guests get a free dorm bed at Ali Hostel with early check-in from 04:00. You sleep, shower, have breakfast at 08:00, repack into a day bag, hand the rest to reception and join the 08:30 briefing. Because the tour starts and ends at the same door, nobody needs to carry three days of clothes over Ma Pi Leng Pass. If you want to see what else the tour price covers, our Ha Giang Loop cost breakdown lists every item, and luggage storage is one of the things you never pay extra for.

If you arrive a day early or want a night in town after the loop, you can book a dorm bed or private room at Ali Hostel, and your Ha Giang Loop luggage simply stays with us between the two stays.

What Should You Carry on the Bike?

One backpack of 20 to 30 litres. That is the Ha Giang Loop luggage limit we recommend for every guest, whether you ride yourself or sit behind an Easy Rider. A small bag keeps the bike balanced on the hairpins, dries faster after a shower of rain and makes every photo stop quicker. On an Easy Rider tour your rider drives the whole route and you sit behind; the day bag goes on your back or is strapped to the bike. If you have not decided how to ride yet, our Easy Rider vs self-drive guide compares the two honestly.

Here is the Ha Giang Loop luggage that rides with you on our tours:

  • Passport. The border-area permit is issued against it, so it stays with you and never goes into storage. Our Ha Giang border permit guide explains how the permit works and why it is already in your tour price.
  • Cash in VND. Villages have no ATMs, so bring enough for drinks, snacks and tips.
  • Phone, charger and a power bank. Homestays have electricity, but you will want power on the road.
  • A light jacket and long trousers. Mornings on the plateau are cool even in summer, and long trousers protect your legs on the bike.
  • Sturdy shoes, sunscreen and sunglasses.
  • Swimwear and sandals with a heel strap if your tour includes the Du Gia waterfall.
  • Personal medication and anything you use every day.
  • Two changes of clothes, not six. Homestays provide bedding and thick blankets, so you do not need a sleeping bag; a quick-dry towel is handy.

You do not need to pack a helmet, rain gear or water. Helmets and protective gear are provided, rain gear comes out in the wet months, and every guest gets 1.5 litres of drinking water a day. Our full Ha Giang Loop packing list goes through clothes and riding gear season by season; treat it as the long version and this Ha Giang Loop luggage guide as the short one.

What Stays in Storage, and How Should You Pack It?

Everything you do not need for three days: the suitcase or big backpack, spare clothes, souvenirs from Hanoi, the laptop, the book you will not open. A few habits make the Ha Giang Loop luggage hand-over painless:

  • Keep valuables on you. Passport, bank cards, cash, phone and camera ride with you. The stored bag is for clothes and gear, not for things you would be upset to lose.
  • Close the bag properly. Zip it, lock it if it has a lock, and tuck loose straps away so nothing snags.
  • Label it. A name tag, or a strip of tape with your name and tour date, helps reception find it fast when ten guests return at once.
  • Repack the night before. Night-bus arrivals have time for this at the hostel before breakfast; day-bus arrivals should sort the Ha Giang Loop luggage split in Hanoi.
  • Think about damp. Ha Giang is humid and the wet months run from June to August. Keep documents and electronics in a dry bag or a zip-lock, and read our Ha Giang rainy season guide if you travel in summer.

Does the Luggage Plan Change on the One-Way Routes to Cao Bang?

Yes, and this is the part most Ha Giang Loop luggage advice skips. Our 5-day Ha Giang to Cao Bang tours are one-way traverses: you ride east over the Khau Coc Cha Pass into Cao Bang and never come back to Ha Giang city. The Classic Ban Gioc Traverse ends in Cao Bang city around 12:00 on day 5, and the Grand North Loop continues by bus to Hanoi the same afternoon, arriving around 19:00 to 20:00. Your guide-driver rides the bike back to Ha Giang alone, which is also why self-drive is not offered on this route: a rental bike cannot be left in Cao Bang.

So on a one-way route your Ha Giang Loop luggage has to travel with you, and there are two ways it does that:

  • Private car (Classic tours). Your luggage stays in the car for all five days. This is the easy option for anyone travelling with a hard suitcase, and for groups of 2 to 4 who would rather not ride.
  • Easy Rider. One soft bag per guest is carried on the bike, strapped behind you. A hard suitcase does not work on a motorbike, so tell us when you book; it can be stored in Ha Giang and forwarded, and we confirm the arrangement before you pay anything.

The same thinking applies if you plan to leave Ha Giang in a different direction afterwards. Our guides to extending the loop to Cao Bang, the direct night bus to Ha Long Bay and Cat Ba and the Sapa to Ha Giang connection all rest on the same fact: the loop tours bring you back to Ha Giang city, and you collect your bag before the onward bus.

How Does Luggage Work on the Bus from Hanoi?

The Ha Giang Loop luggage rule on the bus is the same as on the bike: big bag away, small bag with you. On every sleeper, limousine and VIP cabin bus between Hanoi and Ha Giang, the big bag goes into the hold underneath and you keep a small bag with you. You will not see the hold bag again until Ha Giang, so pack a warm layer, water, a snack and your charger in the day bag, and wear socks you are happy to show, because shoes come off at the door on sleeper and cabin buses. One-way fares, which we book at the operator’s price, are 250,000 VND for a sleeper, from 300,000 VND for luxury and limousine coaches and 350,000 to 550,000 VND for a VIP cabin. Our Hanoi to Ha Giang bus guide compares the three, and you can reserve a seat on our bus ticket page.

When the night bus pulls into Ha Giang city at 04:00 or 05:00, the Ha Giang Loop luggage routine starts straight away: a free dorm bed is waiting at Ali Hostel, you sleep until breakfast, repack, and leave the big bag with reception. On the last day of the loop the group is back in the city in the late afternoon, you collect your bag, and the evening buses to Hanoi leave at 17:00 to 18:00, arriving around 05:00. We book that ticket for you if you like.

Trekking Tours and Car Tours: Same Rule, Different Bag

The Ha Giang Loop luggage rule holds for our other formats too. On the 4-day village trek from Khuoi My to Xa Phin, the walk starts and ends at Ali Hostel, so your main luggage stays in storage and you carry one small backpack with what you need for three nights; the local porter-guide carries the picnic lunch, not your clothes. On a Ha Giang Loop by car the question disappears: your bag rides in the boot and you can bring what you like, which is why families and anyone with a suitcase tend to choose the private car option on Classic tours.

Wherever you sleep on the route, the homestay nights are the same: a bed with bedding and blankets, a hot shower and a home-cooked dinner, in villages that sit inside the Dong Van Karst Plateau UNESCO Global Geopark. Nobody checks how much Ha Giang Loop luggage you brought; the only thing a small bag changes is how comfortable the ride feels. For a wider picture of the region, the official Vietnam tourism guide to Ha Giang is a good starting point.

FAQ: Ha Giang Loop Luggage

Is luggage storage free at Ali Hostel?

Yes. For tour guests, Ha Giang Loop luggage storage is free for the whole length of the tour, until you are back in Ha Giang city. It is included alongside the free dorm bed on the night before departure; see what’s included in a Ha Giang Loop tour for the full list.

Can I take a suitcase on the Ha Giang Loop?

Not on a motorbike. On the loop tours, Ha Giang Loop luggage means a day bag: leave the suitcase at the hostel and ride light. On the one-way 5-day routes to Cao Bang, choose the private car, or tell us when you book so the suitcase can be stored in Ha Giang and forwarded.

How big should my day bag be?

20 to 30 litres is the right Ha Giang Loop luggage size. That holds two changes of clothes, a jacket, toiletries, documents and electronics for three or four days, and it still sits comfortably on your back or on the bike.

What if I am continuing to Cao Bang, Ha Long Bay or Sapa after the loop?

The 2-, 3- and 4-day loop tours return to Ha Giang city in the late afternoon, so you collect your bag and board the evening bus. Only the one-way 5-day Ha Giang to Cao Bang tours end away from Ha Giang, and on those your Ha Giang Loop luggage travels with you.

I am only renting a motorbike or staying one night. Can I still leave a bag?

Message us on WhatsApp before you arrive and we will confirm. Our Ha Giang Loop luggage storage is organised around tour departures and returns, so we like to know when you will be back for the bag.
