Yes, you can travel from Ha Giang to Ha Long Bay without going back to Hanoi. Direct VIP cabin buses leave Ha Giang city at 07:00, 10:00 and 19:00, from 450,000 VND (about $17) for a single cabin, and a sleeper bus with the ferry included runs to Cat Ba Island at 19:00 and 23:30 for 550,000 VND. Most travellers take the 19:00 bus on the evening their Loop ends, sleep on board and wake up near the sea.
We sell these tickets every week from our office in Ha Giang city, at the operator’s own fare with no mark-up. The departure times and fares below are the ones we book against in 2026, for Ha Long, Cat Ba, Hai Phong and Van Don, plus the honest answer to the question we hear most: is the direct bus really better than going back through Hanoi?

Can you go from Ha Giang to Ha Long without going back to Hanoi?
You can, and it is the single easiest way to tighten a trip around northern Vietnam. A lot of travellers assume every bus out of Ha Giang ends in Hanoi, so they ride back to the capital, spend a night there and then take a second bus or shuttle to the bay. The direct Ha Giang to Ha Long service skips that backtrack: one ticket, one night on the road, and you arrive on the coast in the morning.
This matters most when you are planning the whole north in one go. If you are still deciding how many days to give the mountains, our Ha Giang Loop itinerary lays out the 3, 4 and 5 day routes, and the north Vietnam 2 week itinerary shows where the bay fits after the Loop. The bus from Ha Giang to Ha Long is the link that lets those two pieces sit side by side without a wasted day in between.
Ha Long Bay and the Cat Ba archipelago are one UNESCO site: in 2023 the World Heritage listing was extended and renamed Ha Long Bay – Cat Ba Archipelago. That is useful to know when you pick a stop, because the “bay” you see from a Ha Long cruise and the Lan Ha Bay side reached from Cat Ba are two ends of the same limestone seascape.

Which Ha Giang to Ha Long bus should you book?
Leaving Ha Giang, the Ha Long service we book is VIP cabin only; sleeper buses run on this route only in the other direction. So the choice is really about how many of you there are and what time you want to leave.
- Travelling alone: a single VIP cabin, 450,000–550,000 VND. An enclosed pod of about 85 × 180 cm with a curtain and a reading light.
- Travelling as a couple: a double VIP cabin, 800,000 VND for one cabin you share. Two singles would cost 900,000–1,100,000 VND, so the double saves a little if you are happy to share one pod.
- Finishing a Loop tour that day: the 19:00 or 19:30 departure. Our tours arrive back in Ha Giang city in the late afternoon, which leaves time for a shower and dinner.
- Want to see the road: the 07:00 or 10:00 day bus. You lose a day of sightseeing but arrive in time for an evening in Ha Long.
If you came up on a night bus from Hanoi you already know what a cabin feels like; our Hanoi to Ha Giang bus guide compares every class in detail. The cabins on the Ha Giang to Ha Long run are the same type of vehicle.

How does the Ha Giang to Cat Ba bus and ferry ticket work?
If you would rather stay on an island than in Ha Long city, book the Cat Ba ticket instead of the Ha Giang to Ha Long bus. It is a sleeper bus that leaves Ha Giang at 19:00 or 23:30 for 550,000 VND, and the fare combines the bus and the ferry crossing, so you do not have to find the boat yourself or buy a second ticket at the pier.
The sleeper bus is a step down from a cabin: open berths in rows, air conditioning, a blanket and a pillow, but no enclosed pod. In exchange you go straight to the island that faces Lan Ha Bay and Cat Ba National Park, which is the base many independent travellers prefer to the cruise piers of Ha Long.
Coming the other way, a luxury bus leaves Cat Ba at 15:30 for Ha Giang, 550,000–600,000 VND, again with the ferry included. Luxury buses have 34 berths with privacy curtains and a phone charging socket.

Ha Long, Cat Ba, Hai Phong or Van Don: where should you get off?
All four stops sit on the same stretch of coast, and all four have a direct bus from Ha Giang. Pick the one that matches what you want to do next.
| Stop | Choose it if… | Bus from Ha Giang |
|---|---|---|
| Ha Long | You have booked an overnight or day cruise on Ha Long Bay | VIP cabin, 07:00 · 10:00 · 19:00 · 19:30 |
| Cat Ba Island | You want an island base, Lan Ha Bay boat trips and the national park | Sleeper bus + ferry, 19:00 · 23:30 |
| Hai Phong | You want a city stop, or to continue by plane from Cat Bi airport | VIP cabin, 06:00 · 08:00 · 19:00 · 20:00 |
| Van Don | You are heading for the quieter Bai Tu Long Bay islands, or flying from Van Don airport | VIP cabin, 07:00 · 19:00 |
Our honest default: if your cruise is already booked, take the Ha Giang to Ha Long cabin bus; if you have no cruise and want to choose on the spot, Cat Ba gives you more options for the same money.
Direct Ha Giang to Ha Long bus or back through Hanoi?
Going back through Hanoi is not wrong. There are far more departures between Ha Giang and Hanoi than to the coast, so it is the flexible option if your plans are loose or you want a night in the capital anyway. The direct Ha Giang to Ha Long bus wins on almost everything else:
- One ticket instead of two. A Ha Giang–Hanoi sleeper is 250,000 VND, and you then need a separate bus or shuttle to the bay. The direct cabin starts at 450,000 VND for the whole journey.
- No hotel night in Hanoi. The night bus is your bed, so the money you would spend on a room in the Old Quarter stays in your pocket.
- No 05:00 arrival in a city you are leaving anyway. Night buses from Ha Giang reach Hanoi very early, which means hours of waiting before a hotel check-in or the next bus.
Where Hanoi still makes sense: you are flying home from Noi Bai, you want to add Ninh Binh (our Ha Giang vs Ninh Binh guide covers the direct bus there too), or you need a fixed date and the coast buses on your day are full.

How do you fit the Ha Giang to Ha Long bus around a Loop tour?
Our tours start and finish in Ha Giang city. On the last day you ride back in the afternoon; on the 3-day Dong Van & Ma Pi Leng tour (from 2,850,000 VND, about $110, permit and VAT included) you cross the Bac Sum Pass one last time and reach the city in the late afternoon. That is exactly the window for the 19:00 Ha Giang to Ha Long cabin bus.
A simple plan that works:
- Night 0: overnight bus from Hanoi, rest free at Ali Hostel until breakfast (tour guests only).
- Days 1–3: the Loop, ending in Ha Giang city in the late afternoon.
- Evening of day 3: dinner in town, then the 19:00 bus from Ha Giang to Ha Long or Cat Ba.
- Day 4: wake up on the coast and start your bay days.
Doing it in reverse? From Ha Long, VIP cabins leave for Ha Giang at 08:00, 19:00, 19:30 and 20:00 (500,000–550,000 VND), and sleeper buses at 17:30 and 19:00 (450,000 VND). Take an evening bus and you arrive in Ha Giang early in the morning; if you are joining one of our tours, you rest at Ali Hostel until breakfast and the 09:00 departure. Not sure how long to stay up north? Read how many days the Loop really needs before you fix the bus date.
How do you book the Ha Giang to Ha Long bus?
Send us your date, the number of people and the stop you want, on WhatsApp or through our bus tickets page. This is how it works with us:
- Operator fare, no mark-up. The price you pay is the bus company’s listed fare.
- Confirmed before you pay. We send the operator’s name, the pick-up point and your seat on WhatsApp. Operators can change times, so we confirm yours first.
- Paid in full at booking. Bank transfer has no fee; card payments carry a 4% fee.
- Changes: once confirmed, tickets are non-refundable, but you get one free date change up to 48 hours before departure.
Bus tickets are never part of a Loop tour price, with us or with anyone else; our guide to what a Ha Giang Loop tour includes lists the costs people forget. Booking your Ha Giang to Ha Long bus at the same time as the tour is the easiest way to avoid a full bus on your day.
Tips for the night bus from Ha Giang to Ha Long
Whichever stop you choose, the Ha Giang to Ha Long night bus is easy once you know a few habits of Vietnamese long-distance buses.
- Eat before you board. A 19:00 departure means dinner at 18:00. Buses make rest stops, but you do not choose where.
- Keep a small day bag in your berth. Passport, phone, charger, cash and a warm layer, because the air conditioning runs all night. Big bags go in the hold.
- Shoes come off at the door. On Vietnamese sleeper and cabin buses you leave your shoes by the steps or carry them in a bag.
- The first hours are winding. The road has plenty of bends before it leaves the mountains. If you get motion sick, take something before departure.
- Check your stop with the driver. Coast buses make several drop-offs; show the driver the name of your hotel or pier.
