Short answer: five days is enough to ride the Ha Giang plateau and reach Ban Gioc Waterfall in one trip, and seven days is what it takes to do the same thing without long, tiring days. If you want the classic loop plus Cao Bang on a backpacker budget, take a 5-day route with dorm homestays. If you want private rooms, a smaller group or a car, the 5-day Ban Gioc Traverse or the 7-day private car trip will suit you better.
This guide compares the three Ha Giang Cao Bang itinerary options we actually run from Ha Giang city: what each day covers, where you sleep, how you travel, what it costs and how you get back to Hanoi. If you are still working out the basics of the road east, how the two provinces connect and what Cao Bang adds to the loop, start with our guide Ha Giang to Cao Bang: how to extend your loop. This post is about the next question: how long, and which route.
Ha Giang Cao Bang itinerary options at a glance
Every Ha Giang Cao Bang itinerary below starts in Ha Giang city, cross the Dong Van Karst Plateau and finish near Ban Gioc Waterfall, the falls on the Vietnam–China border. The three differ in pace, comfort and how the trip ends.
| Route | Length | Pace | Where you sleep | How you travel | Price from, per person | How it ends |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Grand North Loop | 5 days + free Night 0 in Ha Giang | Full days; Day 3 is the longest transfer | Homestays, shared dorm | Easy Rider | $406 (10,550,000 VND) | Bus from Cao Bang, in Hanoi about 19:00 to 20:00 |
| Ban Gioc Traverse | 5 days | One way, no backtracking; last day is a half day | Private en-suite room every night | Easy Rider or private car | $463 (12,050,000 VND) by Easy Rider · $590 (15,350,000 VND) by private car | Cao Bang city, about 12:00 |
| Ha Giang & Cao Bang by Private Car | 7 days, 6 nights | The slowest; Ban Gioc at sunset and again at dawn | Private en-suite room every night | Private car with driver | $759 (19,710,000 VND) | Onward transport from Cao Bang City, booked separately |
Every route includes an English-speaking local guide, the meals listed in the itinerary, drinking water every day, travel insurance, and the border-area permit for both Ha Giang and Cao Bang, filed and paid for you. Transport to Ha Giang at the start, and onward from Cao Bang at the end, is sold separately at the operator fare.
The 5-day Grand North Loop, day by day
This Ha Giang Cao Bang itinerary is the full Ha Giang Loop with Cao Bang added on the end. You sleep in shared dorms at family homestays, which keeps the price down and the evenings social. Transport is by Easy Rider: a local rider drives, you sit on the back.
- Night 0: overnight cabin bus from Hanoi to Ha Giang city, about 300 km and 6 hours. Free dorm bed at Ali Hostel, with early check-in from 04:00.
- Day 1: Ha Giang → Quan Ba Heaven’s Gate → Lung Tam → H’Mong King’s Palace → Dong Van. About 150 to 160 km. Night at Doan Ket Homestay in Dong Van Old Quarter.
- Day 2: Lung Cu Flagpole → Lo Lo Chai → Ma Pi Leng Pass → boat on the Nho Que River → Meo Vac. About 100 km, boat ticket included. Night at Da Nho Homestay, Meo Vac.
- Day 3: Meo Vac → Me Pia 14-turn pass → Bao Lac → into Cao Bang → Pac Bo. The longest transfer day of the trip, with a short trek at the pass. Night at Me Farmstay, Pac Bo, with dinner with the family.
- Day 4: Pac Bo → Ban Gioc Waterfall → Nguom Ngao Cave, two kilometres of stalactite chambers. Night at Pa Hideaway in Dam Thuy, minutes from the waterfall.
- Day 5: Ban Gioc → Angel Eye Mountain (45-minute trek) → Cao Bang → bus to Hanoi, arriving about 19:00 to 20:00.
What this Ha Giang Cao Bang itinerary gives you in five days: the whole plateau, including Lung Cu and the Nho Que boat, plus Pac Bo, Ban Gioc and Nguom Ngao, with entrance tickets included. Pac Bo is where Ho Chi Minh returned to Vietnam in 1941; you see the cave, the Lenin Stream and Coc Bo village. What you give up: Day 3 is a long day on the road, and you finish with an evening bus rather than a night in Cao Bang.
See the full plan on the Grand North Loop tour page.
The 5-day Ban Gioc Traverse, day by day
Same length, different trip. This Ha Giang Cao Bang itinerary goes one way across the plateau and east into Cao Bang with no backtracking, sleeps in private en-suite rooms, and keeps the group to six guests at most.
- Day 1: Ha Giang → Khau Lan waterfall (40-minute forest trek) → Quan Ba → Lung Tam → H’Mong King’s Palace → Lao Sa. About 150 to 160 km. Night at Doi Da Homestay, Lao Xa village.
- Day 2: Lao Sa → Lung Cu → Dong Van → Ma Pi Leng → Meo Vac → Bao Lac → Khuoi Khon. You cross into Cao Bang today. Night at Khuoi Khon Homestay, a Black Lo Lo village in Bao Lac.
- Day 3: Khuoi Khon → Khau Coc Cha 14-tier pass → Pac Bo. About 120 to 140 km, with Coc Bo Cave and the Lenin Stream. Night at Me Farmstay, Pac Bo.
- Day 4: Pac Bo → Angel Eye Mountain → Dam Thuy → Khuoi Ky stone village. About 110 to 130 km with an easy meadow walk. Night at Yen Nhi Homestay, minutes from Ban Gioc.
- Day 5: Ban Gioc Waterfall → Nguom Ngao Cave → Phia Thap → Cao Bang city. Half day, ending about 12:00.
What changes compared with the Grand North Loop: the plateau (Lung Cu, Dong Van, Ma Pi Leng) is packed into Day 2, so you spend less time in the Ha Giang highlands and more in Cao Bang villages. You get private rooms every night and the option of a private car. The Nho Que boat is not part of this route, and the bamboo raft at Ban Gioc is an optional extra. You finish in Cao Bang city at lunchtime, which works well if you are continuing somewhere else rather than going straight back to Hanoi.

The 7-day private car trip: what two extra days buy
The longest Ha Giang Cao Bang itinerary we run is by private car with a driver and an English-speaking guide all the way. It follows the same one-way direction, from Ha Giang to Ban Gioc, never twice down the same road. Here is where you sleep, night by night:
- Night 1: Dong Van, private en-suite room with hot shower.
- Night 2: Da Nho Homestay, Meo Vac.
- Night 3: Pachidua Ecolodge, Du Gia.
- Night 4: Khuoi Khon Homestay, Bao Lac.
- Night 5: Cao Bang City.
- Night 6: Yen Nhi Homestay, Khuoi Ky stone village, Dam Thuy.
The two extra days buy three things the 5-day routes cannot fit in:
- A night in Du Gia and a swim at the waterfall there.
- Ban Gioc twice: at sunset, then at dawn from a bamboo boat, which is included in the price. Our Ban Gioc Waterfall guide covers the falls themselves.
- The Tu San Canyon boat on the Nho Que River as well as the Cao Bang sights.
Meals are 6 breakfasts, 7 lunches and 6 dinners. Entrance fees for H’Mong King’s Palace, Lung Cu Flagpole, the Nho Que boat and Ban Gioc Waterfall are included, as is VAT at 8%. The complete day-by-day plan is on the Ha Giang & Cao Bang by Private Car page.
What about six days?
We do not run a fixed 6-day Ha Giang Cao Bang itinerary. If six days is what you have, our honest advice is to take one of the 5-day routes and keep the sixth day as a buffer: a rest day in Ha Giang city before you start, or slack at the end for your onward journey. Mountain roads and weather do not always keep to schedule, and in a short Ha Giang Cao Bang itinerary a spare day is worth more than one extra stop squeezed in. If you can stretch to seven, the private car trip is the version that is built to be unhurried.
Which Ha Giang Cao Bang itinerary suits you
Choose the 5-day Grand North Loop if…
- You are travelling on a budget and happy in shared dorms.
- You want the full Ha Giang Loop, including Lung Cu and the Nho Que boat, and Cao Bang on top.
- You want to be back in Hanoi on the evening of Day 5.
- A long riding day does not put you off.
Choose the 5-day Ban Gioc Traverse if…
- You want a private en-suite room every night and a group of six at most.
- You would rather spend nights in villages (a Black Lo Lo village, a farmstay at Pac Bo, a Tay stone house) than in towns.
- You prefer a car, or you want the Easy Rider experience with more comfort at night.
- You are continuing from Cao Bang city rather than heading straight back to Hanoi.
Choose the 7-day private car trip if…
- You are travelling as a family, a couple who prefer comfort, or anyone who does not want to spend days on a motorbike.
- You want Du Gia, the Nho Que boat and Ban Gioc at sunset and dawn in one trip.
- Pace matters more to you than price.

Getting back to Hanoi at the end
This is the part of any Ha Giang Cao Bang itinerary that people forget to plan. The Grand North Loop ends with a bus from Cao Bang, reaching Hanoi at about 19:00 to 20:00 on Day 5; the ticket is sold separately. The Ban Gioc Traverse ends in Cao Bang city at about 12:00, and the 7-day trip ends with onward transport from Cao Bang City. On both, that onward leg is not in the tour price, and we can book it for you at the operator fare. Build your next night’s plans around where the tour finishes, not where it started.
FAQ
Is 5 days enough for Ha Giang and Cao Bang?
Yes. A 5-day Ha Giang Cao Bang itinerary is enough: both of our 5-day routes cover the Ha Giang plateau, Pac Bo and Ban Gioc Waterfall. The trade-off is pace: the Grand North Loop has one long transfer day, and the Ban Gioc Traverse fits the plateau into a single day.
How do I get from Ha Giang to Ban Gioc and back to Hanoi?
On all three routes, Ha Giang to Ban Gioc is part of the tour. At the end, the Grand North Loop puts you on a bus from Cao Bang that reaches Hanoi at about 19:00 to 20:00. The other two routes finish in Cao Bang city, and onward transport is booked separately at the operator fare.
Do I need a border permit for Cao Bang?
Both Ha Giang and Cao Bang require a border-area permit on these routes. On all three tours we file it and pay for it for you, and it is already inside the price.
Can I do the Ha Giang Cao Bang itinerary by car instead of motorbike?
Yes. The Ban Gioc Traverse is available by private car from $590 per person, and the 7-day trip is by private car with a driver from $759 per person. The Grand North Loop is by Easy Rider.
How much do I pay to book?
For tours, you pay a 500,000 VND deposit per guest plus the card fee when you book, and the rest in full before departure.
