Dong Van accommodation during the 2026 Buckwheat Flower Festival costs about 200,000 to 500,000 VND a night in a homestay, 400,000 to 800,000 VND in a guesthouse and 700,000 to 1,500,000 VND in a hotel, and prices climb on festival weekends. Those are the reference rates the provincial newspaper Bao Tuyen Quang published on 22 October 2026, three days before the festival opens in Dong Van on Sunday 25 October. If you join a Ha Giang Loop tour, the Dong Van night is already in the price, so the festival surge never reaches you. If you travel independently, book Friday and Saturday nights early and ask to see the listed price before you pay.
We are Ha Giang Ali Travel, a licensed tour operator and hostel in Ha Giang city, and we sleep a group in Dong Van almost every night of the flower season. This guide to Dong Van accommodation is built from the official festival dates, the published price bands, what our own guests pay on tour and what we see in the old quarter every November. For the bigger picture of what a trip costs, start with our Ha Giang Loop cost breakdown. This article zooms in on the one night of the Loop that gets expensive.

How much does Dong Van accommodation cost during the 2026 festival?
On 22 October 2026, Bao Tuyen Quang, the official newspaper of the province that now includes Ha Giang, published reference accommodation prices for the festival period in Dong Van, Meo Vac and Lung Cu. The report groups Dong Van accommodation into three bands.
| Type of Dong Van accommodation | Price per night (VND) | About (USD at 26,000) | What you get |
|---|---|---|---|
| Homestay | 200,000 to 500,000 | $8 to $19 | Family-run, dorm beds or simple private rooms, shared or private bathroom, dinner often available |
| Guesthouse (nha nghi) | 400,000 to 800,000 | $15 to $31 | Private room with bathroom, usually no meals, often on the main street |
| Hotel | 700,000 to 1,500,000 | $27 to $58 | Reception, breakfast, better beds and heating; the top of the band is the newest hotels on festival weekends |
Two details in that report matter more than the numbers. First, the bands describe peak-period prices and the paper says rates rise sharply on weekends and on days with festival events, so a homestay bed that costs 300,000 VND on a Tuesday can be 500,000 VND on a Saturday. Second, lodging businesses in the area have committed to listing their prices publicly and describing their services honestly. Ask to see the listed price before you hand over cash and you will rarely be overcharged.
For comparison, a dorm bed at our own Ali Hostel in Ha Giang city costs 100,000 VND and a double superior room 300,000 VND all year round, so Dong Van accommodation in festival week costs noticeably more than the same bed 150 km south. That gap is the price of sleeping inside the Dong Van Karst Plateau UNESCO Global Geopark on the weekend the whole country wants to be there.
When is the 2026 Buckwheat Flower Festival, and why does it move Dong Van accommodation prices?
The 12th Buckwheat Flower Festival opens at 20:00 on Sunday 25 October 2026 at Youth Square in Dong Van, under the theme “Am vang mien da”, roughly “Echoes of the Stone Land”. According to Bao Tuyen Quang’s report on the 2026 flower season, about 400 hectares of buckwheat have been planted across the plateau this year, including 57 hectares in Pho Bang, 45 of them reserved for festival activities, and 70 hectares in Lung Cu. The fields are deliberately placed along the tourist route: Quan Ba Heaven’s Gate, the Vuong Palace at Sa Phin, the Lung Cu flag tower and Lo Lo Chai village.
The bloom runs from late October into December, with the fullest pink fields usually in November. That is exactly why Dong Van accommodation tightens: the opening weekend and the first weekends of November bring Vietnamese visitors from Hanoi for two-night trips, and they book the old quarter weeks ahead. Foreign riders on the Loop arrive in a steady stream all week, so midweek nights stay calm. Our separate guide to the Ha Giang buckwheat flower festival covers where to see the flowers; our month guides for the Ha Giang Loop in October and the Ha Giang Loop in November cover the weather.

Where should you stay in Dong Van: old quarter, main street or a village?
Dong Van is a small town, so the choice is less about distance and more about noise, price and what you want outside your door in the evening.
The old quarter: the Dong Van accommodation everyone wants
The Dong Van Ancient Street is a short row of century-old stone and timber houses around the old market, with the cliff right behind. Homestays and small guesthouses here are the Dong Van accommodation that Bao Tuyen Quang says is most sought after in festival season, because you can walk to the Sunday market, the Dong Van night market, the cafés and Youth Square, where the festival stage stands, in a few minutes. Expect the top of each price band here on weekends and some music from the square until late on the opening night.
The main street and new blocks: hotels and quieter guesthouses
Most of the hotels, and the guesthouses in the 400,000 to 800,000 VND band, sit along the main road and the newer blocks a few minutes’ walk from the old quarter. You lose the stone-house atmosphere and gain a private bathroom, a lift in the newer buildings and a better chance of a free room on a Saturday. For a couple who wants a proper double bed after a long riding day, this is often the best value Dong Van accommodation in festival week.
Villages near Dong Van: Lo Lo Chai and Lung Cu
About 25 km north, Lo Lo Chai village sits at the foot of the Lung Cu flag tower, and its Black Lo Lo families run some of the most atmospheric homestays on the plateau, rammed-earth houses with a courtyard and a view of the flag. This year there is a practical bonus: on 16 October 2026 the Lung Cu commune authorities ordered every building site in Lo Lo Chai and the commune centre to stop work from 22 October 2026 to 28 February 2027, to keep the village clean and quiet for the festival and the winter tourist season. If you have ever slept next to a cement mixer in a popular village, you will understand why that matters.

Meo Vac: the second night
Most Loop itineraries sleep in Dong Van one night and Meo Vac the next, on the far side of Ma Pi Leng Pass. Meo Vac has its own homestays and hotels in the same price bands, and because the festival stage is in Dong Van, Meo Vac is usually the easier town to find a weekend room in. If Dong Van accommodation is full on your Saturday, riding on to Meo Vac is a legitimate plan, as long as you cross the pass in daylight.
Is Dong Van accommodation included in a Ha Giang Loop tour?
Yes, Dong Van accommodation is part of every Loop tour we sell. On our Dong Van and Ma Pi Leng 3-day tour, night 1 is at Doan Ket Homestay in the Dong Van Old Quarter in a shared dorm, and night 2 is at Da Nho Homestay in Meo Vac. The price includes the guide, the motorbike and fuel, helmet and protective gear, the border-area permit, entrance fees, the Tu San Canyon boat, 3 breakfasts, 3 lunches and 2 dinners, 1.5 litres of water a day and travel insurance up to 50,000,000 VND. The current prices are 2,850,000 VND (about $110) if you bring your own bike, 3,250,000 VND ($125) to ride one of ours and 4,250,000 VND ($163) with an Easy Rider, all with 8% VAT and the permit included.
Three things follow from that for anyone comparing Dong Van accommodation options:
- No festival surcharge. Our tour prices are published once for the whole year on the tour pages, and the Dong Van night costs you the same in festival week as in April.
- A private room is cheap. If you do not want a dorm, a private room for two at the homestay is 350,000 VND per room per night, which is below the guesthouse band in town. Ask for it when you book.
- The bed is held. Your deposit of 500,000 VND per guest confirms the tour, and we confirm the homestay beds for the whole group in advance, so you are not phoning around the old quarter on a Saturday afternoon.
If you want to know what those homestay nights are really like, from showers to dinner to the dorm layout, read our Ha Giang Loop homestay guide. Our older round-up of the best Ha Giang Loop accommodation lists specific hostels and homestays along the whole route.
How far ahead should you book Dong Van accommodation for the festival?
From what we see every autumn, the nights that fill are the Fridays and Saturdays from the opening weekend of 25 October through mid-November, and the nights of any big festival event. Sunday to Thursday, walk-in travellers still find beds in Dong Van, usually at the lower end of the price bands. The practical rules we give our own guests:
- On a tour: book the tour one to two weeks ahead for a weekend departure in festival season. The Dong Van night is handled for you.
- Independent, weekend: reserve Dong Van accommodation directly with the homestay or hotel one to two weeks ahead, confirm the price in writing (Zalo or WhatsApp) and arrive before dark. Keep the message; it is your evidence of the agreed rate.
- Independent, midweek: you can usually choose on the day, but if you want a specific old-quarter house, message it the day before.
- Flexible plan B: if the old quarter is full, the main-street hotels, Lo Lo Chai and Meo Vac are each a realistic fallback, in that order of distance.
If you are wondering whether the plateau feels overrun in flower season, our honest answer is in the guide to Ha Giang Loop crowds: the viewpoints are busy on weekends, the road in between is not.
How do you get to Dong Van without a tour?
Dong Van is about 150 km from Ha Giang city by the QL4C road over Quan Ba, Yen Minh and the Tham Ma slope, a four-hour drive. We sell the local buses at the operator fare on our bus ticket page: a 16-seat minibus from Ha Giang to Dong Van is 150,000 VND and a limousine van is 400,000 VND, with the same fares on the way back. Riders can rent a bike from us from 250,000 VND a day for a Honda Vision to 600,000 VND for a Yamaha WR 155R, permit paperwork included, and reach Dong Van the same day. Most independent travellers arrive from the capital on the Hanoi to Ha Giang bus overnight, sleep a night at Ali Hostel in the city, leave the big bag with us and head up to their Dong Van accommodation light.

How can you keep Dong Van accommodation costs down in festival season?
- Book Dong Van accommodation for a midweek night. Plan your Loop so the Dong Van night falls on Sunday to Thursday; the fields look the same on a Wednesday and the beds cost less.
- Take a dorm bed, or share a private room. A 350,000 VND private room on our tour is 175,000 VND each for two people.
- Ask for the listed price. Operators have committed to posting prices; a quick look at the board settles most negotiations before they start.
- Eat at the homestay or the night market. Home-cooked dinners are included on our tours; independently, the night market is the cheapest hot meal in town.
- Do not pay the hotel band for a homestay room. If a homestay quotes above 500,000 VND for a basic room on a weekday, that is outside the published band; walk 100 m and ask again.
What is worth doing in Dong Van once you have a bed?
Drop the bag at your Dong Van accommodation and walk the old quarter before the light goes: the stone houses, the old market hall and a coffee at one of the cafés facing the cliff. In the evening the night market sells grilled pork, corn wine and thang co, and in festival week Youth Square has music and stalls. The next morning, the 25 km ride north to the Lung Cu flag tower passes the 70 hectares of buckwheat planted around Lung Cu this year, then Lo Lo Chai, and on the way back from Dong Van toward Meo Vac you cross Ma Pi Leng Pass. The Vuong Palace at Sa Phin and the fields at Pho Bang are on the road in from Yen Minh, so you can see both before you even check in.

FAQ: Dong Van accommodation
Is Dong Van accommodation more expensive during the buckwheat festival?
Yes, on weekends and event days. The published festival-season bands are 200,000 to 500,000 VND for a homestay, 400,000 to 800,000 VND for a guesthouse and 700,000 to 1,500,000 VND for a hotel per night, with the top of each band reached on Friday and Saturday nights. Midweek prices sit near the bottom of the bands.
How much is a homestay in Dong Van per night?
Between 200,000 and 500,000 VND in festival season, according to Bao Tuyen Quang on 22 October 2026, which makes a homestay bed the cheapest Dong Van accommodation there is. On our tours the Dong Van homestay night is included, and a private room for two is 350,000 VND per room.
Do I need to book Dong Van accommodation in advance?
For Dong Van accommodation on Friday and Saturday nights between 25 October and mid-November, yes, one to two weeks ahead. For other nights you can usually choose on arrival, though booking the day before is wise if you want a specific old-quarter homestay.
Can I get a private room on a Ha Giang Loop tour?
Yes. Shared dorms are standard on our group tours, and a private room for two guests is 350,000 VND per room per night. Tell us when you book so the homestay can hold it.
Is it better to stay in Dong Van or Meo Vac?
Most riders do both, one night each. Dong Van accommodation puts you next to the old quarter, the Sunday market and the festival square; Meo Vac is quieter and easier to book on a festival weekend. If you only have one night and it is a weekend, Meo Vac is the safer bet for a room.
Are there real hotels in Dong Van?
Yes. Hotels are the top band of Dong Van accommodation, 700,000 to 1,500,000 VND per night in festival season, with reception, breakfast and heated rooms. They are along the main road rather than in the old quarter, and the newest ones sit at the top of the band on weekends.
