It is part food market, part craft market and part open-air cultural show: ethnic minority families sell highland dishes and brocade, while a stage and the square itself host khen (H’Mong pan-pipe) dancing and folk singing.

Unlike the famous daytime Dong Van Market — the big Sunday trading market where hill tribes come to buy and sell — the Dong Van night market is smaller, later and built around atmosphere: lanterns, warm food, music and the floodlit old houses. What should you eat at the Dong Van night market?

Come hungry. The stalls around the Dong Van night market and the eateries lining the old square serve the honest, hearty food of the stone plateau. Portions are cheap and cooked in front of you.

• Thang co — the signature highland stew (traditionally horse, now often beef), the dish of every H’Mong market.
• Men men — steamed ground corn, the staple of the plateau, usually eaten with broth.

What is there to see and do after dark?

The Dong Van night market is only the centre of a wider evening. Give yourself two or three hours to wander the old quarter on foot:

• Watch the khen dancing. H’Mong men play and dance with the curved pan-pipe on the square — the most photographed moment of the night.

Where is it, and how does it fit the Ha Giang Loop?

Dong Van town sits at around 1,000m in the far north of Ha Giang province (administratively now part of Tuyen Quang province since the 2025 merger, though everyone still rides the “Ha Giang Loop”). It is about 150km from Ha Giang city — a full, spectacular day of riding — and it makes the natural overnight stop between the northern and eastern arms of the Loop.

• From Dong Van it is roughly 25km north to Lung Cu Flag Tower, Vietnam’s northernmost point.
• Heading east, the road climbs the legendary Ma Pi Leng Pass above the Nho Que River toward Meo Vac (about 22km).
• Nearby day sights include Pao’s House and, on Sundays, Meo Vac Market.
