The easiest way to get from Sapa to Ha Giang is a direct bus: a limousine van takes about six hours and costs around 300,000 VND (about $12) one way, and VIP cabin buses run from 350,000 VND. You do not need to go back through Hanoi. If you have an extra day and a car or a strong riding background, the slow back road through Bac Ha, Xin Man and Hoang Su Phi is one of the most beautiful drives in the far north.
We sell Sapa to Ha Giang bus tickets every week from our office in Ha Giang city, so the fares and departure times below come from the operator timetables we book against, not from a forum post. Below you will find each bus class, when to leave, the scenic alternative, and how to roll straight into a Ha Giang Loop itinerary the next morning.
How do you get from Sapa to Ha Giang?
There are four realistic ways to make the Sapa to Ha Giang trip. Here is how they compare:
- Direct bus (best for most people): limousine, VIP cabin, luxury or sleeper coach. Around six hours by limousine, 300,000–550,000 VND.
- Private car with driver: door to door, and you can stop on the scenic back road. A 4-seat car with driver starts from 2,340,000 VND (about $90) per day; longer routes are quoted on WhatsApp.
- Motorbike on the back road: only for experienced riders with a valid licence. Allow a full day or split it with a night in Hoang Su Phi.
- Back via Hanoi: two long bus legs and usually a wasted day. We only suggest it if you have business in Hanoi anyway.
If you are still deciding whether you need both regions at all, read our honest Ha Giang vs Sapa comparison first. Many travellers who do both go west to east, so the Sapa to Ha Giang direction is the one we book most.

Day bus or night bus from Sapa to Ha Giang?
This is the decision that shapes your first day on the Loop. Our advice after years of meeting guests off these buses:
- Take a morning limousine if you are starting the Loop the next day. You reach Ha Giang in the afternoon, have time to try a bike, collect your helmet and sleep a full night before a 09:00 start.
- Take an evening bus if you want to save a night of accommodation. You arrive in the small hours, so plan where you will rest. If you are on one of our tours, you can rest free at Ali Hostel until breakfast and the 09:00 departure.
- Afternoon departures work too, but you arrive after dark and miss most of the mountain scenery on the way in.

Arriving a day early also gives you an evening to explore Ha Giang city, the starting point of every Loop.
The scenic back road: Bac Ha, Xin Man and Hoang Su Phi
The direct buses mostly take the faster lowland roads. The scenic way from Sapa to Ha Giang goes higher: Sapa to Lao Cai, up to Bac Ha, across Si Ma Cai, then through Xin Man and Hoang Su Phi before dropping down to Ha Giang. It is slower and the bends never stop, but you see a side of the north that very few tourists reach.
- Bac Ha: famous for its Sunday market, where Flower Hmong families come down from the hills to trade buffalo, horses and embroidery.
- Si Ma Cai: home to Can Cau, a Saturday market that still feels mostly local.
- Xin Man: high grassland and the market town of Coc Pai.
- Hoang Su Phi: the terraced valleys that rival Sapa’s, and the sea of clouds at Chieu Lau Thi peak.

If you have the time, split the back road with a night in a terrace village. Our Hoang Su Phi homestay guide covers where to sleep, and September to October is when the terraces turn gold.
Two practical points. First, this road is only for drivers or riders with real mountain experience. Landslides close sections after heavy rain, and there are long stretches with little phone signal. Second, several communes on the way lie in the border zone, so the same rules as on the main Loop apply. Our Ha Giang border permit guide explains what foreigners need. On our tours the permit is included and we handle the paperwork.

What the new Lao Cai and Tuyen Quang tourism link means for you
On 1 October 2026, the culture and tourism departments of Tuyen Quang province (which now includes Ha Giang) and Lao Cai province (which includes Sapa) signed a cooperation programme for 2026–2030, reported by Bao Tuyen Quang. The two provinces named five priority routes to develop, including:
- Sa Pa to the Dong Van Karst Plateau Global Geopark
- Tuyen Quang – Hoang Su Phi – Xin Man – Si Ma Cai – Bac Ha
- Tuyen Quang – Lam Binh – Hoang Su Phi – Bac Ha – Sa Pa
Tuyen Quang will lead a survey of new tour routes in October 2026, and the two sides plan to prepare a joint UNESCO dossier for the art of the Hmong khen, the bamboo pipes you hear at every highland market. For travellers, the honest takeaway is simple: the Sapa to Ha Giang connection is now an official priority, so expect better promotion and more joined-up tours over the next few years. The buses already run today.
How to fit the Ha Giang Loop after Sapa
Here is the plan we give most guests coming from Sapa to Ha Giang:
- Day 0: morning limousine from Sapa, arrive in the afternoon, sleep in Ha Giang city. A dorm bed at Ali Hostel is 100,000 VND.
- Days 1–3: ride the Loop. Our 3-day Dong Van and Ma Pi Leng tour starts from 2,850,000 VND (about $110) with your own bike, or 4,250,000 VND (about $163) with an Easy Rider. The permit and VAT are included.
- Day 3 evening: night bus to Hanoi, or carry on east with our guide to Ha Giang to Cao Bang.
Not sure whether three days is enough? Our guide to how many days the Ha Giang Loop needs compares two to five days. If Sapa and Ha Giang are both part of a longer trip, our north Vietnam 2 week itinerary shows how to fit the whole north together.

Sapa to Ha Giang: practical tips
- Book a day ahead in peak season. September to November and Tet fill the morning limousines first.
- Keep your passport on you. Hotels and the border-area permit both need it.
- Carry cash. Small rest stops on the Sapa to Ha Giang road usually take cash only.
- Pack light for limousines. Vans have less boot space than coaches; one main bag per person is the safe rule.
- Take motion-sickness tablets if winding roads bother you. Sit near the front.
