Are cheap Ha Giang Loop tours worth it? Sometimes, yes. A cheap Ha Giang Loop tour at around $99 can be a fair deal for a confident, flexible traveller who mainly wants the famous passes and a lively dorm, but at that price something has to give: usually group size, the homestay, the rider, the bike, the insurance or the meals. The trick is knowing which of those you can live without.
We are a licensed tour operator based in Ha Giang city, and we ride this loop every week. This guide explains, from the operator’s side of the desk, what a very low price has to leave out and how you can check what you are really buying before you pay a deposit to anyone, including us.
The short answer: who a cheap Ha Giang Loop tour suits
A cheap Ha Giang Loop tour usually works well if you:
- are travelling solo on a tight budget and enjoy big, social groups;
- are happy in a shared dorm with basic bathrooms;
- do not mind a fixed, fast schedule with short photo stops;
- have already checked your own travel insurance covers motorbike riding.
It is usually the wrong choice if you are a nervous pillion passenger, travelling with a partner who wants a private room, older, carrying an injury, or simply want time to walk into a village rather than shoot it from the roadside. For those travellers, the few extra dollars buy something real.
Where the money goes on any Ha Giang Loop tour
Every operator on the loop pays for broadly the same things. Before any profit, a tour price has to cover:
- The rider or guide, for every day of the trip, plus their food and bed on the road.
- The motorbike: fuel, tyres, brakes and the servicing that keeps it safe on steep mountain passes.
- Homestay beds and meals for each night.
- Entrance fees and tickets, such as the boat through the Tu San Canyon on the Nho Que River.
- The border-area permit the loop requires.
- Insurance for the guest.
- Tax, licence and the office that answers your message at midnight when a bus is late.
Most of those costs are the same whether you buy a cheap Ha Giang Loop tour or a premium one. So when one price sits far below the rest, the difference does not disappear: it comes out of one of the lines above, or it comes back to you later as an extra charge.
For comparison, here are our own public prices. Our shortest trip, the Ha Giang Loop Express, is $107 (2,790,000 VND) with an Easy Rider. Our Dong Van & Ma Pi Leng 3-day tour is $110 if you bring your own bike, $125 if you ride one of ours, and $163 with an Easy Rider. So at the bottom of the market, the gap between a cheap Ha Giang Loop tour and a fully licensed one is often smaller than people expect. What changes is what sits inside the price. What a cheap Ha Giang Loop tour has to cut
1. Group size
The simplest way to make a cheap Ha Giang Loop tour add up is to put more heads in the group. Bigger groups mean more waiting at every stop, a slower pace on narrow roads and less attention from the guide. Some people love the party feel; others find they spent three days in a convoy. Ask for the maximum number of guests, not the “usual” number.
2. Homestay standard
Shared dorms are normal on the loop, and a good dorm is a great night. The question is the standard: clean bedding, enough hot water for the whole group, a real dinner. On a cheap Ha Giang Loop tour, that can mean the most crowded house on the road. Ask for the names of the homestays, then look them up yourself.
3. Rider experience
If you ride as a pillion, the rider is the product. On the passes of the Dong Van plateau, a calm, experienced rider matters far more than any viewpoint. A tight budget pushes operators towards whoever is available that day. Ask how riders are chosen and whether they ride the loop regularly.
4. Bike condition
Brakes and tyres wear quickly on mountain roads. Keeping bikes in good shape costs money every week, and it is one of the easiest places to save without the customer noticing, until the descent. If you ride yourself, check the brakes, tyres and lights before you leave town, and ask what happens if the bike breaks down.
5. Insurance
This is the cut that matters most on a cheap Ha Giang Loop tour, and the one that shows least. Ask whether insurance is included, who the insurer is, and what it covers. Then check whether your own travel policy covers motorbike riding in your role, as a passenger or as the rider. Our guide to whether the Ha Giang Loop is safe goes through this in more detail.
6. Meals, water and tickets
Some cheap Ha Giang Loop tour prices exclude lunches, drinking water, entrance fees or the boat ticket, and you pay for each one on the road. None of that is wrong if it is written down. It only becomes a problem when the “cheap” price turns into a normal price one ticket at a time.
7. The permit
The loop needs a border-area permit. Check whether it is in the price or sold on top. Our Ha Giang border permit guide explains what foreign travellers need.
8. Pace
Cutting a day is another way to cut the price. Fitting more road into fewer days leaves less time to stop, walk and eat slowly. Short trips are fine if you are short on time; just know you are choosing speed over depth.
Cheap tour vs what to check: a side-by-side table
| What can be cut | What it can look like on a cheap Ha Giang Loop tour | What to ask before you book |
|---|---|---|
| Group size | Large convoy, long waits at stops | What is the maximum number of guests per group? |
| Homestay | Crowded dorm, not enough hot water | Which homestays, by name, each night? |
| Rider | Whoever is free that day | How are riders chosen, and do they ride the loop regularly? |
| Bike | Worn brakes and tyres | When was the bike last serviced? What if it breaks down? |
| Insurance | None, or unclear | Is insurance included? Which insurer, and what limit? |
| Meals and water | Some meals or water paid on the road | Exactly which meals are included, day by day? |
| Tickets and permit | Boat, entrance fees or permit charged extra | Are entrance fees, the boat and the border permit in the price? |
| Pace | More kilometres, fewer stops | How many kilometres per day, and where are the stops? |
What our entry price includes, so you can compare like with like
We would rather you compare us fairly than choose us blindly. On our Dong Van & Ma Pi Leng tour, the price includes:
- a free dorm bed at Ali Hostel on Night 0, with early check-in from 04:00, and pick-up and drop-off within Ha Giang city;
- 2 homestay nights in a shared dorm, in Dong Van and Meo Vac;
- 3 breakfasts, 3 lunches and 2 dinners, home-cooked;
- 1.5 L of drinking water per person per day;
- an English-speaking local guide throughout;
- helmet, body and knee protectors for self-riders;
- entrance fees for every scheduled stop and the boat through the Tu San Canyon;
- the border-area permit, filed and paid for you at cost;
- travel insurance with BIC for every guest, up to 50,000,000 VND.
What is not included, stated just as plainly: the bus between Hanoi and Ha Giang (a sleeper is 250,000 VND one way, and we book it at the operator fare), tips, personal spending and drinks beyond the included water. A private room at the homestay is +350,000 VND per room per night.
If you want smaller groups and your own room, that is a different product, not a bigger discount. Our Classic tours use private en-suite rooms, and trips such as Du Gia Valley and Ban Gioc Traverse run with six guests at most. The White Cliff & Sky Path 3-day tour starts at $188 if you ride yourself. That is a real step up in price, and we say so openly.
How to check any tour before you book
Use this list on any offer, whether it is a cheap Ha Giang Loop tour or a premium one. A good operator will answer every point in writing without fuss.
- Get the full inclusions list in writing: meals by day, water, entrance fees, boat, permit, insurance.
- Get the exclusions list too. What is left out tells you more than what is put in.
- Ask for the maximum group size, not the average.
- Ask for the homestay names for each night and look them up.
- Ask about insurance: included or not, which insurer, what limit.
- Ask how riders are chosen if you will ride pillion.
- Inspect the bike before departure if you ride yourself: brakes, tyres, lights, horn.
- Check the company is licensed and ask for its licence number. Ours is 08-0007/2025/CDLQGVN-GP LHQT.
- Read the deposit and payment terms. With us, a tour takes a 500,000 VND deposit per guest plus the card fee, and the rest is paid in full before departure.
- Add up the extras (bus, tickets, meals not included) to find the true price, then compare.
When a cheap Ha Giang Loop tour is the right call
We are not going to pretend every traveller needs the most expensive option. If you are young, fit, relaxed about sharing a room, happy in a big group and you have run through the checklist above and liked the answers, a cheap Ha Giang Loop tour can give you a brilliant few days. Plenty of people have the trip of their lives that way.
Where we would push back is when the low price hides something you would not accept if you saw it written down: no insurance, a tired bike, or a rider nobody has vetted. The loop is beautiful, and it is also a mountain road. Spend your savings on the things you can compromise on, never on the ones that keep you safe.
