The Perfect Ha Giang Loop Itinerary: 3, 4 & 5 Days (2026)

Ha Giang Loop itinerary - Nho Que River and Tu San Canyon

A great Ha Giang Loop itinerary is not about squeezing more stops into fewer hours — it is about arriving at the right places at the right time of day: the Ma Pi Leng Pass before the haze, Dong Van’s old quarter after the day-trippers leave, the Nho Que River when the light turns the water jade. After years of riding this circuit weekly, this is the Ha Giang Loop itinerary we actually run — day by day, for both 3-day and 4-day versions.

Still deciding between the two? Our guide on how many days you need goes deeper — the short version: 3 days covers it, 4 days lets you feel it.

Before You Start: The Route Basics

Every Ha Giang Loop itinerary below starts and ends in Ha Giang city (overnight bus from Hanoi, sleeper from 250,000 VND) and runs the circuit clockwise: Quan Ba → Yen Minh → Dong Van → Ma Pi Leng → Meo Vac → back via Du Gia. Foreigners need the $10 border permit — handled for you on tours, explained in our permit guide. Ride with a licence + 1968 IDP, or go pillion with an Easy Rider and skip the paperwork problem entirely.

The 3-Day Ha Giang Loop Itinerary

Day 1 — Ha Giang → Quan Ba → Yen Minh → Dong Van (~150 km)

Climb out of the city to Quan Ba Heaven’s Gate for your first look over the Twin Mountains, then ride the pine roads to Yen Minh. In the afternoon it is pass after pass — the Tham Ma bends, corn fields wedged between limestone teeth, the Vuong Palace if time allows — into Dong Van by dusk. Sleep: Dong Van old quarter.

Day 2 — Dong Van → Ma Pi Leng → Meo Vac (~50–70 km, the big one)

The shortest distance and the biggest day. Ride the Ma Pi Leng Pass slowly — the canyon of the Nho Que River drops away beside you the whole way. Take the boat ride through Tu San Canyon if your pace allows (on a 3-day schedule it is tight; many riders save it for a 4-day plan). Overnight in Meo Vac or a village homestay.

Day 3 — Meo Vac → Du Gia or Mau Due → Ha Giang (~150 km)

The quiet day tourists skip — and locals love. The Meo Vac to Du Gia road is the wildest riding of the loop; Du Gia itself is a Tay village in a rice-field bowl, perfect for a swim at the waterfall before the final run home. Catch the night bus back to Hanoi.

Day 2: the cliff road at Ma Pi Leng — ride it slowly, this is what you came for.

The 4-Day Ha Giang Loop Itinerary

Same circuit, transformed pacing — riding drops from 5–6 hours a day to a relaxed 4–5, and the extra day buys the plateau’s best corners. This is the Ha Giang Loop itinerary we would book ourselves:

Day 1 — Ha Giang → Quan Ba → Yen Minh (with time to breathe)

Heaven’s Gate, the Twin Mountains viewpoint, Lung Khuy Cave, and an unhurried afternoon into Yen Minh. Sleep: Yen Minh or a nearby village.

Day 2 — Yen Minh → Lung Cu → Lo Lo Chai → Dong Van

North to the Lung Cu Flag Tower — the northernmost point of Vietnam — and the Black Lo Lo village of Lo Lo Chai beneath it. Pao’s House and the Vuong Palace fill the afternoon, and you get the reward 3-day riders miss: a full evening in Dong Van’s ancient street, lanterns on, day-trippers gone.

Day 3 — Dong Van → Ma Pi Leng → Nho Que boat → Meo Vac

Ma Pi Leng with no clock pressure, the M-shaped bends, and the Nho Que River boat through Tu San Canyon — the deepest canyon in Southeast Asia and, from the water, the loop’s single most surreal hour.

Day 4 — Meo Vac → Du Gia → Ha Giang

The wild southern road, the Du Gia waterfall swim, lunch with a local family, and home with the sunset. Night bus to Hanoi, asleep before Yen Minh’s passes fade from your head.

The Nho Que boat ride — tight on a 3-day plan, unmissable on a 4-day one.

The 5-Day Ha Giang Loop Itinerary: Adding Cao Bang and Ban Gioc

Five days is the version most riders wish they had booked. The first three days follow the loop above; on day four you leave the karst plateau behind and ride east into Cao Bang province, and on day five you stand in front of Ban Gioc — the widest waterfall in Vietnam, on the border with China. It turns a mountain circuit into a crossing of the whole far north.

Day 4 — Meo Vac → Bao Lac → Cao Bang (~200 km)

A long, quiet riding day on roads almost no tour bus takes. The route drops out of the limestone into river valleys around Bao Lac, then climbs again through tea and maize country. Lunch is at a roadside stop by the Gam River; the night is in Cao Bang town, where the food is Tay rather than H’Mong.

Day 5 — Ban Gioc waterfall → Nguom Ngao cave → home

Early start to reach Ban Gioc before the coaches. You can take a bamboo raft to the foot of the falls, then cool down inside Nguom Ngao cave a few kilometres away. From Cao Bang you can ride back to Ha Giang, or take the night bus straight to Hanoi — we book either.

We run this as Grand North Loop, 5 days from $406 in the Essential set, and as Ban Gioc Traverse, 5 days from $463 if you want private rooms and your own guide.

Which Ha Giang Loop Itinerary Should You Pick?

  • Pick 3 days if your Vietnam schedule is genuinely tight and long riding days do not scare you.
  • Pick 4 days if you want the flag tower, the boat, the Dong Van evening — and a weather buffer. In the June–September rains that buffer is the difference between “the fog lifted the next morning” and “we missed the view entirely” (more in our guide to riding the loop safely).
  • Have 5 days? Extend east to Cao Bang and Ban Gioc Waterfall — a different world of rivers after the limestone.

Ha Giang Loop Itinerary Tips From Our Riders

  • Leave by 8:00 — build your Ha Giang Loop itinerary around mornings; check each day’s forecast at open-meteo.com.
  • Fuel up in every town; stations vanish between them.
  • Book homestays one day ahead in October–November peak.
  • Ride the loop clockwise as written — you keep the canyon on your side of the road at Ma Pi Leng.
  • Do not schedule the night bus home earlier than 20:00 — Day 3/4 deserves its full afternoon.

FAQ: Ha Giang Loop Itinerary

Can I do this Ha Giang Loop itinerary in reverse?

Yes — anticlockwise via Du Gia first is quieter on Day 1, but you lose the canyon-side lane at Ma Pi Leng and the crescendo effect. We ride it clockwise for a reason.

Can I ride this Ha Giang Loop itinerary myself?

With real motorbike experience and a 1968-Convention IDP, yes. Without either, take an Easy Rider — same itinerary, zero licence risk, and you watch the canyon instead of the tarmac.

What does it cost?

Self-riders spend roughly $130–200 all-in; guided tours from $175 (3 days). Full numbers in our Ha Giang Loop cost breakdown.

Where do we sleep?

Family homestays and small guesthouses along the route — Dong Van, Meo Vac and Du Gia all have good options; our tours use hosts we have worked with for years.
