Is Ba Be Lake worth the detour on a Ha Giang and Cao Bang trip? Yes, if you have at least eight to ten days and want a slow day on the water after the high karst passes. If you only have five to seven days, skip it: Ba Be Lake sits south of the usual Ha Giang to Cao Bang road, so adding it costs roughly two extra days that most short trips should spend on Ban Gioc Waterfall instead.
We run tours out of Ha Giang city every day, and “can we add Ba Be Lake?” is one of the questions we hear most from travellers planning the northern loop. This guide gives you the honest answer: what the lake actually is, where it sits on the map, who it suits, and how to fit it into a real itinerary.
What is Ba Be Lake, and why do people rave about it?
Ba Be Lake is Vietnam’s largest natural freshwater lake. It is made of three linked lakes, Pe Lam, Pe Lu and Pe Leng, which is where the name comes from: “Ba Be” is usually translated as “three lakes”. The water stretches for more than 8 km, with an average depth of about 20 m, and it is ringed by limestone peaks and the primary forest of Ba Be National Park.
It is not just pretty. The lake carries some of the strongest protection titles in Vietnam:
- National park since 1992 (about 10,048 ha in total)
- ASEAN Heritage Park since 2004
- Ramsar wetland since 2011, Vietnam’s third and the world’s 1,938th, according to Vietnam’s Nature and Biodiversity Conservation Agency
- Special National Monument since 2012, the top heritage ranking in Vietnam, listed by the Department of Cultural Heritage
The same heritage file records 1,268 species of higher plants and 470 vertebrate species around the lake, including 234 bird species and 107 fish species. In plain terms: this is a quiet, green, forest-and-water place, a completely different mood from the bare stone of the Ha Giang plateau.

Where is Ba Be Lake compared with Ha Giang and Cao Bang?
This is the part most blog posts skip, and it is the reason the detour question matters. The lake used to be in Bac Kan province; since the 2025 merger it belongs to Ba Be commune, Thai Nguyen province, about 50 km from the old Bac Kan town centre.
The classic way to extend the loop, which we explain in our guide to going from Ha Giang to Cao Bang, runs across the north: Meo Vac, the Me Pia 14-turn pass, Bao Lac, Pac Bo, then Ban Gioc Waterfall on the Chinese border. Ba Be Lake lies well to the south of that road, in the forested hills between Na Hang Lake and Cao Bang city. You cannot “pass by” it. You have to drive down to it, stay, and drive back up or on.
That is why none of our scheduled Cao Bang tours stop at Ba Be Lake. On our 7-day private car route, day 4 (Du Gia to Bao Lac) is already about 165 km and day 5 (Bao Lac to Pac Bo and Cao Bang city) about 210 km, the longest day of the trip. Squeezing a lake detour into those days would mean even more hours in the car and less time at the places you came for.
Is Ba Be Lake worth the detour? Our honest verdict
Here is how we answer when guests ask us at the hostel desk:
| Your situation | Our advice |
|---|---|
| 3 to 4 days in the north | Skip it. Do the Ha Giang Loop properly. |
| 5 to 7 days, first time in the north | Skip it. Ha Giang plus Ban Gioc Waterfall is the stronger trip. |
| 8 to 10+ days, or a slow-travel style | Worth it. Add 2 days for the lake as a calm middle chapter. |
| Travelling with kids or older relatives | Worth considering. A boat day is gentle compared with the high passes. |
| Riding a motorbike yourself and tired of passes | Worth it as a rest stop, if your dates allow. |
Choose Ba Be Lake if you love water, forest and village life, want one unhurried day without long riding, and already have Ha Giang’s big viewpoints on your list. Skip Ba Be Lake if your trip is short, if Ban Gioc is your main reason for going east, or if you have already seen Na Hang or Ha Long Bay and want something different from a lake.

What do you actually do at Ba Be Lake?
A visit is built around one long boat trip, followed by a night in a stilt house. The usual boat circuit, as described by the local commune authorities, covers:
Widow’s Island (Ba Goa Island)
A small rock island crowned with trees in the middle of the lake. Local legend links it to the story of how the lake was born, and it is the classic photo stop of every boat trip.
An Ma Temple
A small temple on a forested island. Locals hold its festival on the 6th day of the 2nd lunar month, and the bigger Long Tong spring festival includes an offering here.
Puong Cave
Here the river runs straight through a limestone mountain, and the boat glides into the cave mouth. It is the most dramatic sight on the lake, so keep your camera ready. If you love caves, our guide to caves in Ha Giang covers the karst caves on the loop itself.

Dau Dang Waterfall and Ao Tien pond
At the top of the lake, Dau Dang Waterfall is a wide set of rapids that is at its strongest in the wet season. Ao Tien (“Fairy Pond”) is a small lake up on the mountain, only about 100 m on foot from the main lake shore.
A night in a Tay stilt house
The lake shore is home mostly to Tay, Hmong, Dao and Nung people. The villages that host travellers are Pac Ngoi, Bo Lu, Coc Toc and Ban Cam. A night here feels close to a Ha Giang homestay: wooden house on stilts, shared dinner with the family, an early night. If you want to know what that night is like, read our guide to a Ha Giang Loop homestay, and for the culture behind it, our page on the Tay people.
How many days do you need for Ba Be Lake?
Plan two days: one day to travel in and take the boat trip in the afternoon, a night by the lake, then a day to move on. A same-day visit from Cao Bang or Ha Giang means hours of driving for a short boat ride, which is exactly the trade-off that makes many trips feel rushed.
In practice, Ba Be Lake fits into a trip of about ten days that links Hoang Su Phi, Ba Be Lake, Cao Bang and the Ha Giang Loop. A workable order looks like this:
- Days 1–2: Ha Giang city to the rice terraces of Hoang Su Phi, with a homestay in Hoang Su Phi
- Day 3: drive to Ba Be, boat trip, night in a stilt house
- Days 4–5: Cao Bang city and Ban Gioc Waterfall
- Days 6–10: back west via Bao Lac, then the Ha Giang Loop: Du Gia, Meo Vac, Ma Pi Leng, Dong Van and Lung Cu
Shorter on time? Our Ha Giang Cao Bang itinerary compares the 5-day and 7-day versions, and the two-week North Vietnam itinerary shows where a lake day fits in a longer trip.

How do you add Ba Be Lake to a Ha Giang Loop tour?
Because the lake is off our scheduled routes, it works best as a private, tailor-made trip. Here is what we can tell you from our own price list today:
| Option from Ali Travel | Includes Ba Be Lake? | Price (2026) |
|---|---|---|
| Grand North Loop, 5 days (Easy Rider) | No, goes via Bao Lac and Pac Bo | 10,550,000 VND (about $406) |
| Ban Gioc Traverse, 5 days | No | Easy Rider 12,050,000 VND · private car 15,350,000 VND |
| Ha Giang & Cao Bang by private car, 7 days | No | 19,710,000 VND (about $759) |
| Tailor-made private trip via Ba Be | Yes | Quoted per route on WhatsApp |
For a custom route, a 7-seat car with driver is the comfortable choice for families and small groups; we quote it per route rather than per day because the mileage on a Ba Be trip varies a lot. Tour bookings take a 500,000 VND deposit per guest, with the balance paid before departure, and our tour prices include 8% VAT and the border-area permit. Full terms are on our booking and refund policy page.
Going on your own by public transport? From Ha Giang we sell the 29-seat bus to Cao Bang at 350,000 VND (and 250,000 VND the other way) on our bus tickets page. The lake itself is not on that line, so you would need a local transfer from the Cao Bang side.
When is the best time to visit Ba Be Lake?
The lake is open to visitors all year. Each season has a different character:
- Spring: the Long Tong festival of Ba Be runs from the 9th to the 11th of the first lunar month, with the main day on the 10th at Bo Lu village. It is a national intangible cultural heritage and the liveliest time on the lake.
- Wet season: the forest is at its greenest and Dau Dang Waterfall at its fullest, but heavy rain can slow the mountain roads in. Read our rainy season guide before you plan.
- Autumn and winter: calmer, cooler days and morning mist over the water. This pairs well with the dry, clear months on the Ha Giang Loop; see Ha Giang weather by month.

Practical tips for Ba Be Lake
- Life jackets are compulsory on every boat. Check that your boat has one for each person before you leave the pier.
- Ticket and boat prices: we have not found an official published price list, so we do not quote one here. Confirm the boat price with your homestay or driver before you set off.
- It is a protected area: national park, Ramsar wetland and Special National Monument. No litter, no picking plants, no fishing without permission.
- Leave buffer time: the roads in are mountain roads. Do not plan a tight bus or flight connection on the day you leave the lake.
- Bring cash: cash is the easy way to pay boat crews and small village shops around the lake, just as it is in the homestays on the Ha Giang Loop.
FAQ about Ba Be Lake
Is Ba Be Lake on the Ha Giang Loop?
No. The lake is in Thai Nguyen province, south of the road between Ha Giang and Cao Bang. You need about two extra days to add it to a Ha Giang or Cao Bang trip.
Is Ba Be Lake better than Ban Gioc Waterfall?
They are different experiences. Ban Gioc is a short, dramatic stop at a huge border waterfall; Ba Be Lake is a slow day on the water with a village night. If you can only choose one on a 5–7 day trip, most first-time visitors are happier with Ban Gioc.
Can I visit Ba Be Lake in one day?
You can, but we do not recommend it from Ha Giang or Cao Bang: most of the day goes on driving. Stay one night by the lake to enjoy the boat trip without rushing.
Does Ali Travel run tours to Ba Be Lake?
Not as a scheduled group tour. We build private trips that add the lake to Hoang Su Phi, Cao Bang and the Ha Giang Loop, quoted per route on WhatsApp.
How big is Ba Be Lake?
Official figures put the water surface at about 500 ha, the length at more than 8 km and the average depth at around 20 m, with the deepest point near 35 m.
