Yes, you can do the Ha Giang Loop with kids — but not on the back of a motorbike if your child is under 6. Families with young children do the Loop by private car, and children from 6 years old can also ride as passengers behind a professional Easy Rider. Children aged 6 to under 12 pay 75% of the adult price; under-6s on a private car tour travel free, sharing their parents’ room.
We are a local operator based in Ha Giang city, and we have taken families with toddlers, school-age kids and teenagers around the Loop. This guide to the Ha Giang Loop with kids covers what we actually tell parents who message us: which ages can go, which way of travelling works, what it costs and how to plan the days so everyone still enjoys the mountains on day three.
Can You Do the Ha Giang Loop with Kids?
You can, and the Ha Giang Loop with kids is often more relaxed than people expect. The roads are paved, the villages are welcoming to children, and the viewpoints — Ma Pi Leng, the Nho Que River canyon, the karst plateau around Dong Van — impress small travellers just as much as their parents.
What changes is how you travel. The Loop is a mountain road with steep passes, hairpin bends and trucks, so the real question is not “can we go?” but “which vehicle is right for our family?”. For an honest look at road conditions in general, read our local answer to is the Ha Giang Loop safe before you decide.

What Age Can Children Join a Ha Giang Loop Tour?
These are the rules we apply on every Ali tour, the same ones listed in our questions and answers:
- Under 6: cannot join any motorbike tour. On a Classic tour by private car, they travel free and share their parents’ room.
- 6 to under 12: 75% of the adult price, on every tour.
- 12 and over: full adult price. A child who has turned 12 pays the adult rate.
Motorbike tours are also not suitable for pregnant women or anyone with serious back problems, so if one parent falls in that group, the private car option keeps the family together.
Private Car or Motorbike: Which Is Better for the Ha Giang Loop with Kids?
For the Ha Giang Loop with kids, especially children under 10, we recommend the private car. Here is how the options compare:
- Private car with driver and guide — works for every age, including babies. Seats, shade, a place to nap and room for snacks and spare clothes. You stop whenever a child needs a toilet or a break.
- Easy Rider (child as passenger) — possible from 6 years old, with the child behind a professional local rider, never behind a first-time self-rider. Best for confident, older kids who can sit still for an hour at a time.
- Parents riding by themselves with a child — we do not recommend it. Learning a semi-automatic bike on mountain passes is hard enough without a passenger. Our guide to Easy Rider vs self-drive explains why.
A common mix: one parent rides with an Easy Rider for the thrill, while the other parent and the younger children follow in the car. Tell us your family’s ages and we will suggest a set-up for your Ha Giang Loop with kids.

How Much Does the Ha Giang Loop with Kids Cost?
These are our current per-person prices for the Classic tours that offer a private car. All include 8% VAT and the border-area permit, which we file and pay for you at cost:
- Private Trail, 2 days — private car 4,450,000 VND (about $171); Easy Rider 3,490,000 VND.
- White Cliff & Sky Path, 3 days — private car 6,850,000 VND (about $263); Easy Rider 5,250,000 VND.
- Du Gia Valley, 4 days — private car 8,890,000 VND (about $342); Easy Rider 6,950,000 VND.
Children aged 6 to under 12 pay 75% of these prices, and under-6s on the private car tours are free. Classic tours include homestay nights in a private en-suite room, meals as per the itinerary, an English-speaking local guide, entrance fees and BIC travel insurance for every guest up to 50,000,000 VND. Note that insurance does not cover guests over 80.
To book, we take a 500,000 VND deposit per tour guest and the rest before departure. For a full breakdown of what else to budget, see what a Ha Giang Loop trip really costs.
Which Route Works Best for a Family?
Shorter is usually better when you do the Ha Giang Loop with kids. Each day on our Classic routes covers roughly 120 to 160 km of mountain road, which means several hours in the vehicle with stops.
- 2 days (Private Trail): good for toddlers or a first taste. You still see Quan Ba Heaven’s Gate, the H’Mong King’s Palace, Ma Pi Leng Pass and the Tu San Canyon viewpoint, and the group is never more than six guests.
- 3 days (White Cliff & Sky Path): the sweet spot for kids aged 6 and up. It adds the Lung Cu Flagpole and a bamboo raft on the Ngoc Long stream — both big hits with children.
- 4 days (Du Gia Valley): for older kids and teens who like swimming and slower evenings in a valley village.
Not sure about the length? Our guide on how many days you need for the Ha Giang Loop helps you choose.

Where Do Families Sleep on the Loop?
On our Classic tours you sleep in a private en-suite room at family-run homestays, not in a shared dorm. On the 3-day route that means Doi Da Homestay in the old stone village of Lao Sa and Da Nho Homestay in Meo Vac, a short walk from the night market. On the Ha Giang Loop with kids, dinner is home-cooked with the host family, and there is always rice, soup and simple dishes that children eat happily.
Before and after the Loop, our Ali Hostel in Ha Giang city has quad rooms from 450,000 VND per night, a practical base for a family of four.
How Do You Get to Ha Giang with Children?
From Hanoi the road trip takes roughly 6 to 7 hours, the longest single stretch of the Ha Giang Loop with kids. Families choose between:
- Limousine van (300,000–350,000 VND per seat) — daytime, more stops, easiest with small kids.
- VIP cabin bus (double cabin 550,000 VND) — overnight, so children sleep through the journey.
- Private car with driver — the most comfortable door-to-door option; ask us for a quote for your route.
All seats are sold at the operator fare on our bus tickets page. More detail in our guide on getting from Hanoi airport to Ha Giang.

Tips for the Ha Giang Loop with Kids (from Families Who Did It)
- Plan for car sickness. It is the most common problem on the Ha Giang Loop with kids. The passes are full of hairpins. Sit children in the front half of the car, keep a window open, and bring what normally works for your child.
- Pack layers. Mornings on the plateau can be cold even when the afternoon is hot. Our Ha Giang Loop packing list covers the basics.
- Pick your month. October to April is drier; June to August is green but rainy. Check Ha Giang weather by month.
- Bring familiar snacks. Local food is fresh and mild, but a fussy eater will be happier with their own crackers between villages.
- Hold hands at viewpoints. Many lookouts over the canyon have only a low railing.
- Check health advice early. See the official CDC travel health page for Vietnam for routine vaccines and advice for children.
- Celebrate on the road. One family of ours celebrated a birthday with candles at dinner in the mountains — tell the guide and the hosts will help.

Is the Ha Giang Loop with Kids Worth It?
For families who like the outdoors, yes. Children remember the raft on the stream, the goats on the road and the children in the villages far longer than a museum. The key is choosing the right vehicle and a realistic number of days — then the Ha Giang Loop with kids becomes one of the easiest adventures in northern Vietnam.
