A great Ha Giang Loop itinerary is not about squeezing more stops into fewer hours — it is about arriving at the right places at the right time of day: the Ma Pi Leng Pass before the haze, Dong Van’s old quarter after the day-trippers leave, the Nho Que River when the light turns the water jade. After years of riding this circuit weekly, this is the Ha Giang Loop itinerary we actually run — day by day, for both 3-day and 4-day versions.

Every Ha Giang Loop itinerary below starts and ends in Ha Giang city (overnight bus from Hanoi, sleeper from 250,000 VND) and runs the circuit clockwise: Quan Ba → Yen Minh → Dong Van → Ma Pi Leng → Meo Vac → back via Du Gia. Foreigners need the $10 border permit — handled for you on tours, explained in our permit guide. Ride with a licence + 1968 IDP, or go pillion with an Easy Rider and skip the paperwork problem entirely.
Climb out of the city to Quan Ba Heaven’s Gate for your first look over the Twin Mountains, then ride the pine roads to Yen Minh. In the afternoon it is pass after pass — the Tham Ma bends, corn fields wedged between limestone teeth, the Vuong Palace if time allows — into Dong Van by dusk. Sleep: Dong Van old quarter.
The shortest distance and the biggest day. Ride the Ma Pi Leng Pass slowly — the canyon of the Nho Que River drops away beside you the whole way. Take the boat ride through Tu San Canyon if your pace allows (on a 3-day schedule it is tight; many riders save it for a 4-day plan). Overnight in Meo Vac or a village homestay.
The quiet day tourists skip — and locals love. The Meo Vac to Du Gia road is the wildest riding of the loop; Du Gia itself is a Tay village in a rice-field bowl, perfect for a swim at the waterfall before the final run home. Catch the night bus back to Hanoi.
Same circuit, transformed pacing — riding drops from 5–6 hours a day to a relaxed 4–5, and the extra day buys the plateau’s best corners. This is the Ha Giang Loop itinerary we would book ourselves:
Heaven’s Gate, the Twin Mountains viewpoint, Lung Khuy Cave, and an unhurried afternoon into Yen Minh. Sleep: Yen Minh or a nearby village.
North to the Lung Cu Flag Tower — the northernmost point of Vietnam — and the Black Lo Lo village of Lo Lo Chai beneath it. Pao’s House and the Vuong Palace fill the afternoon, and you get the reward 3-day riders miss: a full evening in Dong Van’s ancient street, lanterns on, day-trippers gone.
Ma Pi Leng with no clock pressure, the M-shaped bends, and the Nho Que River boat through Tu San Canyon — the deepest canyon in Southeast Asia and, from the water, the loop’s single most surreal hour.
The wild southern road, the Du Gia waterfall swim, lunch with a local family, and home with the sunset. Night bus to Hanoi, asleep before Yen Minh’s passes fade from your head.
Yes — anticlockwise via Du Gia first is quieter on Day 1, but you lose the canyon-side lane at Ma Pi Leng and the crescendo effect. We ride it clockwise for a reason.
With real motorbike experience and a 1968-Convention IDP, yes. Without either, take an Easy Rider — same itinerary, zero licence risk, and you watch the canyon instead of the tarmac.
