Toyota Vios 2025 self-drive rental car at Ali Hostel Ha Giang, front three-quarter view

Rain, cold, luggage, kids, or simply a long transfer day — there are trips where a motorbike is the wrong tool. Our Toyota Vios 2025 is the answer: a brand-new automatic sedan kept at Ali Hostel in Ha Giang City, ready the moment you land off the night bus.

This is our own car (plate 23A-129.63) — the photos on this page are the actual vehicle you will drive, not stock images. What you see is what we hand you.

Price

  • Self-drive — $50 / day (1,300,000 VND). Fuel not included; you receive the car with a full tank and return it full.
  • With a driver — $90 / day. Choose this if you do not hold a licence valid in Vietnam, or if you would rather watch the mountains than the road.

What is included

  • Toyota Vios 2025, automatic, 4 seats, air conditioning, large boot
  • The car’s compulsory third-party liability insurance
  • Pick-up and drop-off at Ali Hostel, Ha Giang City
  • Route briefing — where the fuel stations are, which passes get foggy, where not to park overnight

What is not included

  • Fuel — returned full-to-full
  • Tolls, parking fees, traffic fines
  • Security deposit (refunded on return)
  • The Ha Giang border-area permit (260,000 VND / person / province, paid by the traveller) — required for foreigners entering the border districts, and enforced in 2026

Before you book: can you legally drive in Vietnam?

This is the part most rental pages leave out, and it is the part that gets travellers fined. To self-drive a car in Vietnam you need a category B licence plus an International Driving Permit issued under the 1968 Vienna Convention. An IDP issued under the older 1949 Geneva Convention is not valid here.

  • 🇫🇷 France, 🇩🇪 Germany and most EU countries ratified the 1968 Convention — your IDP works.
  • 🇪🇸 Spain signed but never ratified it, so a Spanish IDP has no legal value in Vietnam. If you hold a Spanish licence, book the car with a driver — it is the only lawful way.
  • 🇬🇧🇺🇸🇦🇺 UK, US and Australian licences: check which convention your IDP was issued under before you travel.

We check the licence at handover. We would rather lose a booking than hand you a car you cannot legally drive — an unlicensed driver also voids the insurance.

Good to know about driving the Ha Giang Loop by car

  • The main loop (QL4C) is sealed tarmac and comfortable in a sedan. A few village side-roads and the descent to the Nho Que River are steep and rough — park and walk, or take a motorbike taxi for that section.
  • Fuel stations thin out after Yen Minh. Fill up in Ha Giang City, Yen Minh and Dong Van.
  • Mountain fog is common in the late afternoon on Ma Pi Leng — plan to arrive before dark.
  • Build in a buffer day. Do not book a flight out of Hanoi the same evening you finish the loop.
